Erne's eyes hardened in determination as he implored, "Please, let the child token fulfill its purpose and reveal the path to salvation for my kin. Our tribe's survival hangs by a thread. It's our only hope, Great Goddess." Erne's voice trembled, his breath visible in the frigid afternoon air.
"The path is treacherous," she intoned, her voice echoing through Erne's bones.
"... But the child token shall ignite. For the Lune Twain and this Goddess' promise can never be violated despite your unsightly deeds that I do not wish to condone," she didn't try to conceal her dislike, "Furthermore, it comes with a price that you must also pay as its bearer."
Erne's heart raced. "And the cost?" he dared to ask the question that gnawed him to the core.
