(The Ordinary Ninja ch15)
The night is young, and hiding inside a tree, I sat alone with only the wind by my side. My stab wound has yet to heal, but that was the least of my concerns.
'I look like a monster… hahaha,' I let out a dry chuckle. I checked earlier when I desperately crawled toward a nearby river. My whole face looked like it was melting, and blood was oozing out from the cracks on my skin.
I managed to protect my sense of sight, hearing, and smell, but I can barely feel my tongue, much less taste anything.
'That bastard Akira, I'll search for him in hell one day.'
Akira knew that I was trying to fake my death, so he set up that accursed explosion.
Yes, the explosion wasn't in the script, and Akira's suicide wasn't either.
'He was supposed to fight desperately with the Root ninjas… well, I guess that wasn't the ideal plan from me as well.'
Because after thinking about it, I would do the same. We were both ninjas, after all.
"I suppose the only good thing is that no one can recognize me anymore."
It was a bitter pill to swallow, but reality is like that. You can not have everything you want.

After a week had gone by since my permanent make-up, I sighed in relief.
Knowing Root, they would ensure that I was dead, and I don't know if they did. I was hiding in this tree for an entire week without even a peek of sunlight.
'Sigh, I don't know what kind of tree this is, but it belongs to the fairytales.'
Once you get inside the lush foliage of the tree, it was like you entered a room made of leaves.
'Either way, I'm lucky to have evaded Root's search. As long as I am careful not to reveal my chakra signature, I should be alright.'
After a week of healing, my wounds have begun to heal. My stab wound was still there, but with a constant supply of chakra, I can stop it from reopening.
The only miracle I don't understand is how I survived that damned explosion, I should've been blown to bits!

Meanwhile, on the Hokage tower, the current Hokage was sitting in his office with a solemn look.
"Sigh, that kid."
Hiruzen, despite his age, still retains his impeccable memory. While he may not have a perfect memory, he still knows and remembers each ninja in Konoha, aside maybe from the secret recruits of Root.
"Mamoru was reported dead this morning, I wonder how Itachi will react."
He knew full well how the Sharingan worked, especially how to make it more powerful.
"Mamoru was likely assassinated by Danzo… will this make Itachi stronger? Or will it make him falter?"
Hiruzen mused, but soon shook his head. It all didn't matter to him, what mattered to him was how Itachi would benefit Konoha.
"Everything comes at a cost, and if Itachi wants to keep his brother a 'normal life' in the village, I'm afraid it'll be costly… well, it should be."
But he didn't demand anything else from Itachi, and Itachi's role as a spy to Akatsuki was chosen by Itachi himself.
'It's the least I can do for the unsung hero of Konoha… but some selfish fools want to hinder the boy's training so he can be easier to manipulate. It's lucky that the boy is talented and hard working, foiling those morbid seeds before they could dig deep into the ground.'
With a sigh, Hiruzen gazed down at the village he loved and will always love, fully aware of the darkness hidden within, but choosing to let the balance of good and evil remain balanced.
Hashirama forced peace upon the world, it didn't last.
Tobirama used his knowledge to protect his people, yet his creations only bred more chaos.
He once tried understanding and communication to maintain peace, but he was too weak to bear the burden. When he was strong enough, peace was already nothing more than a fantasy.
Minato tried to rid the evil in the village, but… he died too early to get any result, and chose to maintain the balance of power as his last act.
"Balance… of good and evil. I'll try your method, Minato. I want to see how far we can go."
He wasn't naive enough to get rid of all evil in the village, that was impossible unless he had a golden halo.
As Hiruzen put a kind smile on his face, another man frowned.
"I have a feeling that something bad will happen, but I haven't made any moves as of late. The last one was the elimination of Ghost… team one," the man, Danzo, said coldly.
Not a second later, the captain of Danzo's most elite team appeared in front of him.
"Last time, Root brought Mamoru's blood and bits of flesh as proof of his death. This time, I want you to return and retrieve parts of his body. I don't care if they're rotting or not," Danzo ordered and waited.
.
.
.
Danzo narrowed his eyes.
"Who's there?"
No one answered. Looking at where the captain of Root team one was supposed to be, he frowned even further.
"Danzo… do not cross the line," a voice as sharp as a weapon's edge spoke behind Danzo, but Danzo didn't flinch.
He knew this voice.
"Mamoru is dead. Plain and simple," the voice repeated before suddenly, silence ensued once again.
"Crow…," Danzo growled in fury.
