Evangeline stared outside of the window from her carriage, still conflicted about what happened last night. When Harold had left, Damien had invited her for dinner. She asked a few times, but he only told her that she did not need to worry about her husband.
Damien was so nonchalant that she thought he did not care but the cold eyes of Gerald and the stiffness of the servants around her assured her that the case was not as simple as he had portrayed it.
"I need to leave for the town, I have some leftover business there." She was worried that he would reject her or send his men to keep an eye on her. She was an asset that held much value. But when he just nodded and resumed the dinner, she was shocked.
Till the morning, she was worried that she would somehow be stopped from leaving but she was informed that the carriage was ready and there was no knight waiting for her at her doors.
Even now, when she reached the office of the old lawyer her father used to work with, she was not sure if this was really happening.
The footmen opened the door for her and helped her in fixing the meeting with the old man.
Mr Moore was waiting for her with a grim face.
"Are my papers ready?" she had met with the men two days ago when she had come to play piano in the university. The man was fuming when she left, but Evan knew he was a meticulous person and would not give her a chance to complain.
The man mumbled a curse as he took out the papers from a drawer and passed it to her. "The papers could be your doom." he warned but Evan ignored him.
"Would this be sufficient?" Evan reread the papers. Her eyes searched for a flaw in the papers but she found nothing when Mr Moore gave her a look.
"Yes, my lady, by signing the papers, you would be a free woman again. You can marry anyone of your choice then. But you will also lose your position as Monique. If I must remind you, you will lose all your inheritance and right over the title." Evan closed her eyes. She needed to do this or Harold would never let her go.
"I understand that, thank you, Mr Moore." she nodded when the old man sighed.
"My lady, if you just fight for the position, it would take a long time but there is a chance that you will get divorce and your position both." he explained but Evangeline shook her head. She had already promised marriage to Damien, she could not ask him to wait for her for months or who knows.. It will take years.
"Thank you for the meeting, Mr Moore." she passed a small gold filled bag to the man who sighed.
"Your father was a great man. I have worked with him for a long time, Lady Midnight Star. he would be disappointed if he came to know you are letting go of his position as a baron and your stepdaughter." He could not hide the hostility in his words as he looked at her. "Perhaps you can tell me the reason for your sudden decision. I will try my best to help you." he offered again and she sighed.
"I want to marry someone else." he waited for her to add the reason but when she did not, he looked at her as if she had sprouted horns and turned into a devil.
"So you are giving all your inheritance to your husband because you are cheating on him. Are you serious?" he felt incredulously wrong when Evan shook her head making the man look like a fool.
"He had cheated on me with my sister. That is why I am marrying someone else."
"......."
"And as long as it is about power and position. I want him to taste it before I snatch everything back from him." the man sighed and shook his head. He was never able to understand this woman. That was one of the reasons that he did not work for them after the death of her father.
"Just leave.. If you do not need anything else, just leave this room at once." Evan frowned, the man had always been cold without a reason. "And take the money with you. I do not need it." he pushed the bag away when she sighed and picked it up. They left the room without any argument.
The footmen were waiting for her at the door.
"Are we leaving for the graveyard now, my lady?" he asked in a polite tone when she shook her head.
"I have some gifts to purchase for them before leaving." the footmen knew better to ask a question. He escorted her to a few shops but did not follow her inside.
Once she returned with a lot of bags in her hands, she went to the meeting place where her father was buried. Every noble family held a graveyard closer to their palace where only their family was buried for generations.
When the footmen opened the door for her, she stared at the distance. Today was the third day she had decided to leave her family with Damien. Things didn't go as she planned yet here she was.. Standing with the divorce papers in her hands.
"You need not follow me." the footmen paused, unsure. What if she returned injured the way Ian had dragged her that night.
"They will not attack me today. They have no reason to." she smiled and assured the uneasy man who bowed his head.
As she walked in, she noticed Elene was there too. She was putting flowers at the grave of their father. Elene turned back when she heard the steps and smiled at Evan,
"You are finally here, sister. I thought you had forgotten about the father completely."
