On a planet somewhere in the galaxy, a certain group of soldiers were going about their daily lives when a certain alarm started blaring.
"Something's coming..."
"Is it Frieza?"
"No! That's impossible..." The alien trailed off for a moment. "I think I recognize that signal."
"Of course!" The second alien realized, "It's Vegeta and Nappa." He activated his scouter's communication function to inform the control tower of the Saiyans' arrival.
"Well that's strange, isn't it? I never got an arrival report." The first alien mused as his partner told the control tower about the incoming Saiyans.
...
"Look! Up there!" The pods landed side by side. The soldiers that were assigned to greet the newcoming Saiyans waited for them to open, but nothing happened.
"What are they doing? They should be out by now." One of them wondered aloud after a few moments.
"I'm receiving two very low life force readings on them!" Another soldier realized, checking his scouter.
"What? Why, they're using their life support systems!" They realized.
They quickly brought the two Saiyans to the treatment center, where the doctor looked them over after placing them in the treatment pods.
"What happened?" The doctor on duty shouted, surprised at the extent of the Saiyans' injuries.
"Well, sir... we don't know! All of their readings are in the green." The soldiers who had taken the two Saiyans to the treatment center told him. In fact, the treatment pods had already done most of the work. Both Saiyans were fully conscious.
The doctor went to look at the Saiyan's injuries as detailed on the system. They'd both been on the brink of death, though Vegeta had it notably worse. It was honestly a miracle that the Saiyan Prince had survived at all.
Nappa's injuries had mostly been to the chest and face. His nose had been broken, and he had hairline fractures along his upper jaw. One of his lungs had collapsed. Without the treatment pods, his face would have been permanently altered.
Meanwhile, Vegeta had managed to break just about every bone in his body, more or less. His internal organs were barely hanging on. It was nothing short of a miracle that he'd survived long enough to get to his pod, much less all the way across the galaxy. The doctor didn't know this, but Vegeta would definitely have died without Shay's intervention. Unfortunately for Vegeta, his tail hadn't survived the battle, and couldn't be regrown.
After an unknown amount of time in the healing chamber, the doctor finally let the two Saiyans out of the chambers.
"I'll initiate the draining procedure right... now." The doctor said, freeing the two Saiyans.
"You are both fully healed. You can open your eyes." The two Saiyans stood, checking their bodies. Both of them had gained substantial increases in power, and it took them a moment to reacclimate.
"Unfortunately, Prince Vegeta, we were unsuccessful in reconstructing your tail." The doctor told the Saiyan Prince. Vegeta didn't seem to care too much.
"No matter. I don't need it." Vegeta told the doctor.
...
"Care to tell me what happened, you two? Or is the wound to your egos still too raw to be examined?" The doctor asked as the two Saiyans changed into their new battle armors. Basically everything that Nappa had been wearing above the waist had been absolutely shredded, and Vegeta's had only fared slightly better, "Judging by the... state that Nappa's armor especially had been in, you must have received quite a beating... and that's putting it lightly. You especially are lucky to be alive, Vegeta."
Hearing the doctor's words immediately made Vegeta's face twist in an emotion that not even Nappa could identify.
The Saiyan Prince's mind flashed back to the moment after Kakarot's blast had overpowered his own. He remembered everything...
...
'So... this is how I die, huh?' Vegeta thought as his body was eaten up by the combined power of Goku and Raditz. 'As a weakling... Heh. I don't even have the energy to pull myself out of this beam... I suppose dying as a warrior is better than living on as a weakling, though. I'm sorry... father...'
"Not happening." Shay appeared, just as Vegeta was about to fly into space. At this point, he was only holding onto consciousness through sheer force of will. She magically plucked him out of the blast and fixed his body to the point where he'd be able to get back to the Frieza force's headquarters to get healed.
"W-why?" Vegeta croaked out, barely capable of forming the words. He needed to know why someone would save him, though.
"Because you're not dying yet. Mistress doesn't want you to. You have potential, still."
...
Remembering that made Vegeta's hands stop moving just as he was beginning to put his boots on. 'You're not dying yet. Mistress doesn't want you to.' She had said. He had completely given up. He was dead. Then... someone had chosen to save him. It was humiliating... but he owed this mysterious girl his life. He needed to know more. His pride couldn't stand not knowing why he had been saved. One day, he would pay back his debt. He'd get the Dragon Balls from Namek. He'd destroy Kakarot. He'd destroy Frieza. Then he'd pay back his debt. Once his pride was restored, only then would he be able to move on.
"I hope you two aren't entertaining any ideas of revenge. I might not be here to put you back together next time." Neither Saiyan answered him, thoughts running through both of their heads.
"Nappa, you're being pretty quiet. Was it really that bad?" The doctor asked. Usually, Nappa was annoyingly loud. Full of bluster and arrogance, but not the same type of pride as Vegeta. In a word, the man was a brute. But he hadn't said a word since the moment that he stepped out of the healing tank.
'Maybe that's why us Earthlings were able to beat you. It takes strength to do the right thing, rather than the easy thing. Goku taught me that.' The Namekian had told Nappa. For all of the former general's strength, he'd been useless on the battlefield. All this time... ever since Vegeta was a child, Nappa had been useless and weak. All of his bluster and arrogance was to cover that fact, but it'd been laid bare anyways during the last fight.
He'd always looked down on Raditz for being an embarrassment to Saiyans. The man had been weak compared to the two of them, and he'd never even tried to rectify that. He'd never worked to get stronger on his own, because he'd had weak character. Nappa and Vegeta had attacked him endlessly because of it.
Now, Nappa realized that he'd been the same way. He didn't train. Not really. He didn't try to learn a thing. He hadn't grown a single bit since Planet Vegeta was destroyed twenty or so years ago, because he'd believed that he was strong.
