Capítulo 61: The Hunt

Hanging up the phone, Max couldn't help but smile.

Though initially surprised that Jestner had hired him to capture Mutants on behalf of the Sentry Secret Service, Max quickly grasped his intentions. It wasn't a sudden change of heart; Jestner was likely apprehensive that others might hire Max to find Andy.

For Max, this outcome was undoubtedly positive. Even though Jestner had hired him, it guaranteed that Andy would still be pursued. Simply put, it was akin to being paid for travel expenses. If he took the money, Max wouldn't want to help others save Andy. He'd catch him himself.

"I didn't expect Andy to awaken so quickly. Lauren must not have saved enough money," Max mumbled, curious as to why Lauren hadn't contacted him.

While it wasn't sure that Lauren wasn't present when Andy awakened, the Lauren family must have been aware of it for some time. Now that Jestner had Andy's information, it was inevitable that he would go to their house.

"Are you going to help them catch the Mutant?" Max heard a voice while lost in thought. Turning to look, he saw Blink, wearing a black nightdress, leaning against the door and drying her hair.

"Can't accept it?" Max wanted to gauge Blink's reaction.

Blink shook her head. "I've just escaped myself. How can I worry about others? But honestly, they won't pay, will they?"

"Yup," Max observed Blink, realizing she was telling the truth.

Considering Blink's recent escape and her joining the team, if she were contemplating how to help Mutants and rejecting this mission, Max would have to reconsider allowing her into the team. He ran a mercenary squad, not a hero squad. He didn't want a teammate with a burst of idealism that could harm the team or hinder its development.

"Do I need to participate in this mission?" Blink asked.

Max shook his head. "You go and rest first. The task depends on the situation."

"Good night."

"Good night."

Blink turned and left, closing the door behind her. Max turned off the lights and settled down for the night.

That night, Blink slept soundly.

When she opened her eyes and looked around the room in the morning, she even had a dreamy feeling, suspecting she might still be dreaming. After a while, Blink confirmed she wasn't dreaming; she was living a new life, the kind of life she had hoped for. Stepping out of the room, she glanced at Max's door, wondering if he was already awake.

.....

When Blink descended the stairs, she found Yukio busy in the kitchen.

"Good morning. Do you need my help?" Roar inquired, blinking.

Yukio shook his head slightly, indicating that assistance wasn't required.

"Where are they? Aren't they awake yet?" Blinking scanned the room, not seeing anyone else.

"Viper is in the laboratory, and Max is out. You can explore; the surroundings here are pleasant," Yukio explained.

"Oh." Blink nodded and exited the room.

The sun swayed, casting a dappled pattern through the trees. As Max had described, the gentle rustle of maple leaves in the breeze created a beautiful atmosphere, prompting Blink to relax and resist disturbing the tranquility.

"Nice!" Blink muttered softly.

....

While Blink wasmarveling at the new environment and life, Max had already driven to Lauren's house.

Instead of using a different space, he drove directly to Lauren's residence. Even though there were no visible observers, individuals from the Sentry Secret Service were likely monitoring the area.

Exiting the car and walking towards the house, Max gestured to open the double doors and entered without hesitation.

The interior appeared neat and orderly, showing no signs of conflict or a search. However, the absence of family portraits in the living room caught Max's attention. Climbing the stairs, he first went to the master bedroom, grabbing a few missing clothes from the closet. He then headed to Lauren's room.

"It seems everything was prepared in advance, and the one who left wasn't in a hurry."

Unlike TV dramas, this situation wasn't as sudden. Lauren knew in advance that her brother was also a Mutant and had prepared for this time. So, why didn't she contact him?

Finding nothing of significance, Max turned away and left. Shortly after driving, he sensed a tail following him. With a smile, he opened the car door directly in front.

The car glided in, and the door vanished behind Max. The trailing car could only helplessly report the situation. The Sentry Secret Service hadn't located Lauren and the others, making it challenging to find Max. Perhaps contacting him directly was the only option, but they lacked Lauren's number.

With neither the Sentry Secret Service nor themselves reaching out and considering the Mutant underground organization, Max speculated on their possible hiding place. If an accident prevented them from using phones, they would likely choose a familiar and discreet location. Max recalled taking Lauren to the abandoned factory where he practiced his abilities last time—a secluded spot known to both of them.

With this realization, Max made a swift turn, driving out from the midst of houses, and soon arrived at the factory. Upon entering, he found Lauren curled up in a corner.

"Is she the only one here?"

Opening the door from a different space, Max called out to Lauren.

Startled by the shout, Lauren looked up abruptly and rushed over excitedly, throwing herself into Max's arms. "I knew you'd find me here! I just knew it!"

Feeling the impact of Lauren's embrace, Max gently held her head with one hand while comforting her by stroking her back with the other. "Calm down. First, tell me what happened!"

However, Lauren's emotions were visibly shaken. She sobbed in Max's arms for five or six minutes before regaining composure.

"You are alive thats what matters. Let's talk about what happened first," he suggested, emphasizing the need for a calm discussion.
