The emblem on the carriage that had come to a gentle halt in the front grounds of the estate bore the distinguished mark of House Merriwinter. 

It depicted a symbol of a noble deer and pine trees engraved on the shield that hung from the side of the vehicle.

Nicolaus braced himself as the carriage door revealed its occupant. A subtle furrow crossed his brow, a mute expression of his light wariness of the House Merriwinter.

Deliberately, he placed his hand atop Mikael's and squeezed it unknowingly.

Mikael gazed at the motionless carriages that had just arrived at the estate, wondering why the guest wasn't emerging from her vehicle.

"Don't tell me–" Secretary Cade, who was standing nearby, started to say something, but his voice trailed off into the quiet air.

Nicolaus felt a surge of dread as he understood what this meant. He said to himself, 'She expects me to go and assist her to dismount the carriage.'
