When Ellie fell silent, not answering Sir Bane's question, the room's door opened, and Amber stepped in.

"I didn't kill them both," Amber responded suddenly.

"Amber! Were you eavesdropping?! Her Grace ordered you to wait outside. How dare you defy her orders!" Sir Bane stood up, scolding Amber.

Ellie raised one hand, signaling him to stop.

"Say what you have to say, Amber."

"I didn't kill the wife and child of that man. I planned to threaten him, using his family's lives. I intended to find out about his life, but when I arrived there, I saw that the man had poisoned them both with a sleeping potion."

"Then I followed him, and it turned out he was about to sell his wife and son to one of the slave traders."

"One of the fellow slave traders found me, and a battle ensued. Their deaths were an accident that I couldn't avoid."

"By accident?" Ellie asked cautiously.
