The car ride home seemed to stretch on forever, but it was far from dull. Thanks to Steve, Melissa found herself laughing uncontrollably at his witty jokes and humorous anecdotes. His charming personality and quick wit were truly captivating, and it seemed like he had already shared every detail of his life with her. Now, it was Melissa's turn to open up.
"So, Melissa, are you originally from New York?" Steve inquired.
"No, actually, I'm from Brooklyn," Melissa replied with a smile.
"Ah, Brooklyn, that's fantastic!"
"What's so fantastic about it?" Melissa asked curiously.
"I believe Jeremy grew up in Brooklyn too," Steve revealed.
"He did?" Melissa's interest was piqued.
"Yes, he mentioned it once, though he rarely talks about his past. It seems like a topic he prefers to keep to himself," Steve explained.
"Is there a reason for that? Does he have some unpleasant memories associated with Brooklyn?" Melissa wondered aloud.
"I'm not entirely sure. Jeremy tends to be quite closed off about such matters," Steve admitted.
"Well, have you ever tried talking to him about it? You know, approaching him as a friend and showing your concern?" Melissa suggested.
Steve burst into laughter, unable to contain himself. "I'm sorry, but have you met the guy? Jeremy barely listens to anyone, let alone engages in conversations about personal matters. That's just who he is."
Melissa couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment. She recalled the night when she was intoxicated and told Jeremy that he appeared sad. Embarrassment washed over her as she recollected the events of the previous evening. However, upon reflection, she realized that his captivating gray eyes did indeed reflect a hint of sorrow, something she could empathize with given her own experiences of deep sadness.
"That's his usual self," Steve added after a pause, looking directly at Melissa. "But I've noticed something different about him recently."
"What is it?" Melissa inquired with curiosity.
"He's constantly staring at your painting," Steve revealed.
"He is?" Melissa's eyes widened in surprise.
"Yes, every single day. The butler confirmed it," Steve affirmed.
"Why would he do that?" Melissa pondered aloud.
"Perhaps I should be asking you that question. After all, you're the artist," Steve replied, a mischievous smile playing on his lips.
"You think Jeremy likes me," Melissa chuckled. "Honestly, Steve, you clearly don't know your friend well enough. I'm pretty sure he despises me," she said, recalling the chaotic events of the previous night.
Memories of vomiting on him, requesting an embrace, and even attempting to persuade him into a romantic encounter flooded her mind. Wait! The last one came out wrong.
"Are you all right?" Steve asked, concerned, as he noticed Melissa's complexion turning pale.
"Yes, I'm perfectly fine," Melissa assured him, though her mind was still reeling from her embarrassing recollections.
"Good. So, what were you thinking about?" Steve asked, a mischievous glimmer in his eyes.
"Private matters," Melissa responded, hoping to divert the conversation.
"I see. Don't let them bother you. We're almost there," Steve reassured her.
"I won't," Melissa replied, determined to put her awkward moments behind her.
"Great. By the way, do you ever plan on visiting again?" Steve inquired, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.
"Planning? Visiting?" Melissa chuckled softly. "I didn't plan any of this. And the likelihood of me returning is quite low, to be honest."
"Why is that?" Steve questioned, intrigued by her response.
"I've already told you before. Your friend seems to have a strong dislike for me, and I don't see any reason to revisit a place where I don't feel welcomed. Besides, I don't really know much about Jeremy apart from the fact that he's a kind person who helped me. We're not exactly friends or family, so there's no compelling reason for me to visit again."
Steve listened attentively, his brow furrowed in thought. It was evident that Melissa couldn't see what he saw. Any person in their right mind would be captivated by someone like Jeremy, especially after he had brought her to his own home, a place of comfort he had never shared with anyone else before. It was a perfect opportunity for a connection to blossom, and Steve couldn't help but feel that Melissa was oblivious to Jeremy's feelings for her.
"Mmm... perhaps she's just blind to it," Steve thought to himself. "What she needs is a wake-up call, someone to help her see what's right in front of her." And as luck would have it, he felt he was the perfect person for the job.
