"There are certain spots you'll have to hit on the bridge to collapse it. I'll be your spotter." Sojourn tells Jack.
Knowing this, the moment that either of them peeks over the now broken barricade, they'll be the focus of the Bastions attack.
One of the soldiers grabs the other soldier who is laying on the ground covering his ears and tries to get him to sit up.
After resisting a couple of times, the other soldier recovers a bit and starts to cooperate.
The first grabs his fallen assault rifle, while the one with the bleeding ears grabs a rocket launcher.
Right before they peek back over whatever they have left as cover, each of them knows that between the four of them, they have to defend the bridge, or the tank Bastions will reach the heron and destroy it easily.
Taking what could possibly be their last breath, they peek back over to see that in the brief moments that they weren't shooting, the Bastions have all but regained their momentum and were close to exiting the bridge.
As cannons and bullets fly past them, the guy with the assault rifle opens fire first, targeting the closer Bastions that weren't the tanks.
A rocket launcher comes over the barricade followed by a guy with blood running down his ears as he takes a second to line up a shot before firing.
A rocket explodes into the lines of the tank Bastions, but it only takes out three.
Bullets start to prioritize the guy with the rocket launcher as he ducks back down into his cover.
While this is happening, Sojourns new eyes dart back and forth between various spots on the bridge looking for the best weak points.
"Target, base of the pile." She says to Jack, and he peeks over the barricade to aim.
When he does, bullets start to concentrate on him, but he remains unfazed, keeping his focus on the target.
With the pressure off of him, a rocket launcher peeks back over from its cover with the guy as well and unleashes another rocket which blows up the frontline of Bastions.
The gunfire trained on Jack lessens briefly but now the tank Bastions take to the frontlines.
The ground in front of the barricades erupt with pillars of grass and dirt as the Bastions shots fall short.
Seeing his bullets barely affect the tank Bastions, the guy with the assault rifle tosses it down and picks up a rocket launch and begins to assist his comrade in blasting the omnics.
"1.5 MILS." Sojourn says as her lens accurately show the correct distance to her.
"300-yard dope." Jack begins to adjust his rifle according to her callouts, not letting the bullets that narrowly miss him be a bother.
"Send it!" Sojourn yells and without hesitation, Jack clicks the trigger, and a helix rocket shoots out towards the support of the bridge.
Chunk of brick and metal fly off in an explosion as the bridge groans from having no support underneath it.
The bridge begins to form a dent, pulling the Bastion back as they lose balance at the sudden change in footing.
The groanings of the bridge pauses as the girders tighten and keep the bridge from falling.
Jack reloads his helix rocket as Sojourn scans for the best weak point to attack.
"Target, left girder." She calls out to Jack.
His gun rests on the barricade, aiming at the left support of the bridge.
The Bastions manage to regain their footing and continue their march towards the end of the bridge.
The two soldiers with rockets peek back over their cover again.
Just as one of the rocket men are about to fire, his head cocks back as a bullet passes through it easily and he falls back.
His rocket goes off as his weapon swings to the right, sending his rocket past the other guy into the water of the river.
The remaining guy with bleeding ears laments that he's the final member of the unit and with rage, shoots at the Bastion he thinks killed the other guy.
"1.5 MILS. 275-yard dope." She waits for a couple of seconds as Jack slightly moves his gun before once again shouting, "Send it!"
He fires his helix rocket, and it detonates on the top support of the bridge.
When the helix rocket explodes, the metal ropes keeping it up snap and the bridge lurches to the right, launching some Bastions off the bridge.
The bridge groans once again but this time, it crumbles into the river, taking the entire tank Bastion with it.
Jack lets out a sigh of relief as the rest of the bridge collapses as well, taking out the Bastions.
They have no time to stand in ceremony as a call comes on the radio from their flank.
"We're being overrun. There was suddenly just a surge of them, and we have five KIA."
Jack looks at his timer for the heron and sees they still have ten minutes to defend.
Shaking his head because he knows what he has to do, he calls over the radio.
"Retreat, prepare for immediate evac."
It will only take the stratoscopter a minute to arrive, and even less time for it to extract them.
With no Bastions on this side left to defend against, Jack and Sojourn rush to help them on the flank.
When they arrive, they are momentarily stunned to see the sheer numbers of Bastions assaulting them from his direction.
There were more here than on the bridge.
What also shocked them, was something slowly approaching in the distance.
It appeared to be like a mine, hovering slowly with loose white metal plates that barely covered the gaps showing its molten insides.
Jack and Sojourn look at each other for a brief second before they open fire on the lines of Bastions, providing relief for their soldiers, as they slowly backed into the ruins of Parliament Hill.
An entire row of Bastions configured into turrets and opened fire on the team as the other omnics walked past.
The defenders could only hide behind cover as bullets tore through the building.
Yelps of men getting shot could be heard as Jack and Sojourn dropped to the floor behind walls to keep from getting shot.
Knowing that they had to do something, or the Bastions would get them, Jack manages to grab his assault rifle and level it at the turret form Bastions.
He fires a helix rocket, which explodes three turret form Bastions, lessening the flurry of bullets around them.
The sound of the stratoscopter could be heard over the gunfire as it approaches.
All human forces knew this was their only opportunity to escape, so they laid down covering fire as they slowly backed towards the bridge which was the only safe place for the stratoscopter to land.
Still in the Parliament building with turret form Bastions firing on them, Jack and Sojourn have no choice but to risk it.
They both get up and start dashing to the other side of the building where they just defended the bridge.
They ignored the constant whistles of bullets flying right past them and only focused on escaping.
Their gamble pays off as they jump through the remainder of a door, into the field leading to the stratoscopter.
All surviving units made it to the stratoscopter already and hands reached out, helping Jack and Sojourn on board.
As soon as they were secure, the stratoscopter wasted no time in taking off, releasing a stream of flares to attract any incoming missiles if there were any.
Settling down, Sojourn looked out the window just in time to see the heron they left behind explode, destroying the rest of the Parliament building.
The ride home was quiet, with the sting of defeat heavy on everyone's mind.
As the remains of the city grow into a speck in the distance, Sojourn couldn't help but think that if they keep failing, this is how the world would look soon.
