Chapter 36: Escape

Huff, huff, huff~

In the alternate world, Colin opened his eyes to the sound of howling winds.

Boom!

However, before he could react, intense flames and explosions engulfed his body. The missile launched by Ultron accurately hit him.

Amidst the tremendous blast, Colin plummeted through the air like a weightless airplane, crashing heavily through the layers of clouds into the sea, creating splashes of water and ripples.

"Target lost... Target lost..."

Controlling the thrusters on his back, Ultron descended to the sea level.

Ultron rotated his eyes, glowing with crimson light, scanning the sparkling ocean below.

"Target destroyed! Cease attack mode!"

After a few seconds, it was confirmed that there were no signs of any suspected targets.

Only then did Ultron retract the dangerous red glow in his eyes and close the activated weapon compartment, returning to its normal state.

"Lock released..."

Ultron stored away his offensive weapons. With a thunderous roar from the engine, flames erupted from Ultron's back, soaring above the surface of the sea.

"Cough, cough, cough..."

A few minutes after it left, accompanied by severe coughing sounds.

Colin, who should have died under the missile attack, struggled and surfaced from the water.

"Thank goodness I was prepared..."

He spat out the salty seawater from his mouth, breathing in air with large gulps while feeling relieved.

The process of returning to the alternate world was more dangerous than he had anticipated. Almost no time was given for him to react; the moment Colin opened his eyes, the missile had already struck his body.

If it weren't for unlocking Superman's "Superior Defense" in the real world beforehand...

Perhaps what floated on the water's surface would be Colin's charred remains. No, that's not right. Given the power of the missile just now, his body might have been completely obliterated, turning to ashes.

Taking a moment to calm his emotions, he swam toward the shore.

At the same time, Colin's gaze fell upon the words.

"[Encountered distorted time node, collected a small number of time fragments x2]"

"[Bronze Mark (3/100)]"

"[Faith (783/10,000)]"

Undoubtedly, just like his previous encounters with Doctor Strange, or interviews with Mr. Hyde and others, this time with Ultron Mark I also produced "time fragments."

However, if possible, Colin would prefer such encounters not to happen.

After all, compared to simply shaking hands and conversing with Doctor Strange or obtaining fragments through interviews with Mr. Hyde and others, the process of acquiring these two fragments from Ultron was far too dangerous.

The cost-benefit ratio was too poor.

Shaking his head, Colin withdrew his gaze from the text regarding the "time fragments (Ultron)." As he swam towards the shoreline, he pondered his recent experience of being attacked.

For Colin, this attack was entirely unwarranted.

Firstly, he had no idea why Ultron attacked him.

The enemy appeared out of nowhere in the sky, without any explanation or warning, and fired missiles directly at him while he was in stealth mode.

The entire process made no sense whatsoever.

"So, what did I do to attract the attack from Ultron?"

When he thinks back to the contrast between the days when he was safe and sound, the only thing that stands out was his ability to fly.

"So, it was because I displayed the ability to fly and soared into the sky that attracted Ultron's attack..."

I must have been careless, thinking that I wouldn't be detected under the cover of invisibility.

"But why?"

"Just flying alone shouldn't be a big deal. If I remember correctly, the Thunderbolt member I interviewed before, Songbird, also has the same ability to fly. Why didn't she attract Ultron when she was flying in the air?"

"Or is Ultron's attack only targeting specific targets, and I just happened to become one of those targets?"

One question after another flashes through Colin's mind.

He recalls the appearance of Ultron when it first appeared. Undoubtedly, the opponent was not a fully autonomous artificial intelligence, which means this Ultron was being controlled.

"Then who is controlling Ultron's attacks?"

Floating in the sea, Colin looks up at the blue sky above, the sunlight shining through the clouds onto his face, with a slightly warm temperature.

Other than that, it seems no different from the sky in his memory.

...

By the time Colin reaches the shore, the sky by the beach has already darkened.

He borrows clothes from a villa by the seaside, replacing the tattered cloth on his body.

Colin starts to make his way back following his memory.

The previous experience of being attacked has made him more cautious. Even walking back home, he uses his stealth ability.

The journey is quite calm and peaceful, without any unexpected accidents or troublemakers crossing his path.

Phew~

Climbing the stairs, Colin arrives at his apartment.

Standing at the door, Colin can't help but sigh with relief, his figure fading out of invisibility mode.

The experience along the way feels particularly long to him, and when he reaches the doorstep and relaxes, all the forgotten fatigue rushes in, both mentally and physically. At this moment, Colin feels like his head is throbbing as if he has stayed up for a week straight, and he might just fall asleep the next second if he closes his eyes.

Forcing himself to stay alert, he places his hand on the doorknob.

Click!

With a slight turning sound, the tightly closed door is forcefully pushed open by Colin.

The original key had turned into ashes long ago with Ultron's attack, and now he doesn't have the energy to find the landlord and get another key.

Might as well just twist the door open and get in.

Pushing the door, he enters the apartment.

"Do you think you can escape Ultron's pursuit like this, Mr. Colin Luper?"

Before Colin has a chance to react, a hoarse voice suddenly comes from inside the room.

Immediately as he scanned the room, he saw a blurry figure standing motionless near the window in the room.

"Who are you?"

Turning his head to the source of the voice, Colin asks with a serious expression, while feeling dumbfounded inside.

So, is my stealth ability fake?

Why is anyone able to find me?

...

After a moment of silence, a man dressed in a black trench coat, concealing his body completely, walks out of the shadows.

"Howard Stark, the leader of the Dark Avengers..."

Howard Stark?!

Looking at the man emerging from the shadows and the name he mentioned, Colin's face shows a mix of shock and astonishment.

If he remembers correctly, the Stark family tragically passed away in the 90s, including the founder of Stark Industries, Howard Stark himself.

This was the news Colin saw when he first came here.
