Lady Sibley could not help but gasp again. She had never been so shocked in her entire life. But more than her, everyone else was shocked.
There were many spectators watching the scene. When they heard the young girl claiming that she was the mother of the son of Duke Cassian, no one believed her. However, when the Duke confirmed it himself, who are they to doubt?
"I.. I apologize for my mistake, your highness." The woman bowed her head instantly but from the corner of her eyes, she looked at the young boy again.
She had not noticed it before but now that they were standing close to each other, she was amazed at how similar their faces were! Why had she not noticed it before?
The boy, however, was a complete mismatch for the young woman. Was she really the child's mother?
"I should not be the one you apologize to. You did not insult me after all." He stated in a cold voice. It took her a second to realize that he wanted her to apologize to the women and the child. That meant a common woman and a bastard! For what? She was right about their origins. And if not for the duke's name, she would have really thrown them out of the shop.
"You don't want to?" he asked her again coldly with a sharp look in his eyes that caused her to flinch in fear. How could she dare go against him?
"Of course, not. I know I was wrong!" She turned to Mary and Alec with a fake smile on her face.
"I apologize for my rude words and crude remarks, my lady, young Lord. Please forgive me.'' She bowed her head slightly as her ego did not let her bow completely when Mary sneered.
"Would you have apologized without the Lord's threat?" she asked when the woman flinched. Of course not! Why would she?
The truth was dancing in her eyes which were filled with hatred when Mary scoffed.
"You do not need to apologize if you are not sorry! I did not need your apology anyway." She turned her head holding Alec's hands, "I think this shop is not worth our visit. Let's go to another shop." Alec nodded. He was restless too.
They both walked out hand in hand when Cassian gave one last gold look to the shop owner and lady Sibley as he followed them out.
"Too bad!"
He immediately shook his head as she ruffled his hair. It was obvious you liked that musical box, she sighed, but he refused to accept it. He did not want to create trouble for her.
"Wait! You did not need to leave," said Cassian. "If you like, I can buy the shop and give it to you, Alec. Then you can take anything from there." He offered but Alec shook his head immediately.
"I do not want that, my Lord." Mary sighed. It would have been an effective way to earn money in this strange land.
"There must be another toy shop here, right?" she asked as she did not want to worry about the child again when Cassian nodded.
"Give me the chance to guide you this time." He would make sure they did not face trouble. He was still not sure what consequences they would have to face when they returned to the palace.
As they walked into another shop, many nobles turned to look at Cassian in confusion.
"Show the highest quality toys to the child," he pointed at Alec who was holding Mary's hands.
The staff did not dare to be cold or late. They assisted Alec who followed them and left.
"My Lord.. What shall we do now?" asked Ben in a worried voice.
His wife was an imperial princess. If the fact that he cheated on her with a commoner was leaked. His reputation would sink down the drain. Not only that, the imperial family could name him a traitor and kill him or send him to exile too. It would be difficult to escape the situation.
"How about we tell the truth? It would be difficult to convince them, but it would still be better than facing treason consequences?" he asked worriedly when his eyes noticed Cassian staring at Alec.
Alec smiled as he held the small spring toy in his hands. The doll was bouncing if pressure was put on it. That surprised the young child and he was smiling. His smile was addictive since Alec hardly expresses happiness. Most of the time, he wears a conscious or scared look on his face.
"Is it worth it?" Ben heard Cassian speak, and his head snapped back to his master. What was it worth?
Bring the child here or…. His eyes widened.
"If everyone comes to know that he was my child with Gabriella, the assassins who wanted to kill him at that time would come to him at once. Though I am sure about my calibre, I still did not know who my enemy was and I did not want to risk his life.
But if they would think that he was the son of a commoner, they would be sceptical. They would wait to see how the royal family reacts and how much power Alec holds in reality. If I showed that he was not going to gain my title or hold much power in reality, I might keep him safe. For me. Nothing matters more than his safety. So…" for some reason dread filled Ben's heart when Cassian paused and turned to look into his eyes.
"Spread the rumor that Duke Cassian had a child with a commoner girl as much as you can. I also want to see everyone's reaction."
