Now Ginevra realized that something was out of place, too. She frowned and looked around. "Is he mad, or…"
"Not mad, although it certainly would've been convenient."
The voice came out of the—quite singed by now—groove of the trees near the road. Before Cael's eyes, a previously empty air rippled like water, and a familiar man stepped out, leaning on a cane.
Cael gasped in shock. "Baron di Vinci! What… What in the name of Allfather are you doing here?"
"I have the same question," Ginevra said, narrowing her eyes.
