"It is not like it would be the first time." said Cassey when she saw the struggle on Tyrone's face. "I mean, I will take the sofa like last time."
Penny looked so adamant that Tyrone sighed.
"Alright, we will sleep together in my room." he sighed, brushing his uneasiness aside.
The girl clapped and happiness reached her eyes as she hugged her father. The moment of joy was worth all the struggles he was facing.
He lifted the girl in the air and threw her hard before catching. Her eyes widened but the assurance that her father would hold her made Penny laugh.
She laughed every time he did that until Tyrone was no more frowning. His stoic face had softened and his eyes speaking in the end.
"Higher! Higher daddy!" she kept shouting as she made all kinds of noises and squealed.
Cassey looked at both of them from the side. A myriad of expressions filled her eyes. If only she was not the villain of the story, she could have joined them freely. She was angry that Tyrone blamed him but the more she tried to uncover the truth, the story became more twisted.
Earlier, she had looked for the names of the knights and went to meet them. They were horrified to see her but she could not see an ounce of guilt on their faces but their sudden meeting.
She asked many questions to them for which they replied through gritted teeth. But their explanation of her actions was so perfect.
For a second, she believed that it was really her who did it. She sighed, no matter how much she tried, she could not make them believe and now she had to fall for dirty tricks to gain his trust.
"That is it!" she cursed in a low voice when they both paused and stared at her. Tyrone's eyes narrowing in an instant.
"She would be dizzy if you continued for long. You should take it easy and do not spoil her by accepting her every wish." she adjusted the expression on her face, "her eyes are already looking lost." Tyrone looked carefully at his daughter as she rubbed her eyes and sighed.
He still had so much to learn about her. He gave Penny to Cassey who rubbed the back of the little girl and placed her on the bed.
"Daddy! Are you not coming to sleep?" Penny patted the space on her right as she looked at Tyrone with expectant eyes.
He nodded but his eyes kept watching Cassey as if he was on alert.
She kept his eyes while rubbing the back of the child. Penny was already tired after playing and it did not take long for her to succumb to sleep.
Her breathing evened and finally Tyrone took his gaze away from Cassey and touched Penny's cheeks.
She did not move but snored softly when he leaned and kissed her cheeks.
Cassey smiled, she was going to hug him in their sleep and going to wake up in his arms. But the next moment Tyrone stood up to leave.
"You can sleep here. I will go back in the morning so that she does not notice. But if she wakes up earlier, you can tell her I went for my training just a few minutes ago."He did not look at her as he walked away.
But she was not ready to let go.
"Tyrone!" she called him urgently as she stood up and followed him but his cold glance stopped her in her tracks.
"I can see what you are trying to do. But it would not change anything between us." he announced wounded her again.
She took a deep breath to stop the urge to cry. If only he knew how much she was struggling to save their marriage, to save them and give Penny a wholesome family, not a bunch of lies.
"I am only trying to give a penny to my family. Where she could enjoy the company of both of her parents." but the more she spoke, his eyes started to fill with mockery.
"Ha! You and your fairy tales. I am tired of them. You used to force me for things I did not like to do and now you are using Penny for them. Do you never get tired of it?" his eyes were filled with disdain.
He broke the contact first and looked away,
"In the past, I indulged you because you were my responsibility but now.. I did not feel the need. You are just an extra burden I am trying to bear. Do you have no self awareness to stay silent like a dead being in the palace?"
She lowered her head to hide her misty eyes. She had thought that she was prepared for his harsh words since he was hurt by her betrayal, yet it felt more and more painful.
Still his words had hurt so much more than they should have; it felt like she had been punched in the stomach, and the pain was unrelenting.
"Have you ever loved me, Tyone? How could your love die so easily? How could you believe so many lies about me if you…" she gasped as if air was being sucked from her lungs when he scoffed.
"No! I have never loved you." she flinched and stared at him again but he did not look back at her.
"As I said , you were my responsibility after what happened between us. How could I let you go as a gentleman? I thought it would not be that bad since you are a commoner. You would be easy to handle. But you.. I have never regretted any decision in my life so much."
So their marriage was a lie too. Did anything ever was a truth in that failing relationship. She had thought that he loved her. He had never said that, but she always believed it strongly by looking at his actions and care towards her.
"If.. if nothing had ever happened, would you have ever loved me?"
