The only reason why Mayeux did not have this consciousness yet is because there is no lion yet leading a rebellion.
But Aeryon could understand it because there is rarely a case of successful rebellion.

The slave are more richer, lives in a better house, eat better food, but still slaves nonetheless.
Slaving their years for a job they did not want to buy things that they were told to want.
And when they are sad and depressed, they use their money to look at clowns and jesters that would entertain them with all kinds of entertainment before they go back to work for their masters.
