Luna quickly spun around to face the Ipili behind her. If she could buy a little more time she could heal in this incredibly rich atmosphere of gene energy maybe she could heal and escape.
"Galt? Is that the Cobra headed one?" She asked slowly.
"Yes, the one who fell in battle against you, I know you took his core." Said Kito in a huff. He couldn't believe this frail Huli had managed to overpower Galt, but he was on guard against her, his pit sense already running to be wary of any further Glamour from her.
Luna slowly walked closer to the sign and sighed dramatically, "Yes, he was strong. He almost killed me. If it wasn't for that Duna warrior that came to my aid, I wouldn't have escaped."
"YOU LIE! I would have seen traces of a filthy Duna cur when I recovered his corpse! He was killed with a single clean strike through the heart! His corpse wasn't mangled at all!" Kito vehemently denied.
The Ipili and Duna were races that were perpetually at war. They loathed each other on an instinctive level and would always step in when a chance to slay a member of the opposing tribe arose.
However, like Kito said, the corpse was cleanly dealt with and not mangled. The brutal savagery of the Duna was renowned, their favorite past time was to shake their prey in their massive jowls and rip them limb from limb, often forgoing even weapons when in battle against the Ipili.
"Well, you're smart for a snake. I'll give you that. I figure as soon as I said something about a dog you would immediately start spinning around looking for him. Tsk, what luck I have." Luna smiled her sweetest smile even as the venom from her words sank into Kito's mind.
"You lying bitch I knew it! Where is his Core!" Before Kito could step forward and wring the answer out of the Huli's neck with his bare hands, a thickly calloused hand settled on his shoulder.
"Stop. She is buying time. I saw the energy of Conquest on her when I targeted her. Also, there was no traces of Bulwark energy in the area." Baofa's calm and voice resonated deeply beside Kito.
Luna's heart sank as six more large Ipili came walking down the path and surrounded her with Kito and Baofa. She wasn't even close to fully recovered, and now she was surrounded.
Baofa's eyes narrowed as he stared intently at Luna for a moment and asked in a stern voice that surprised the rest of the Ipili "What are you hiding behind you?"
Kito looked closely, but he didn't see anything. Palin, the large Ipili directly behind Luna with a green tinge to his scales suddenly spoke up, "Looks like two pieces of wood sir, a sign probably."
Kito relaxed a little. He was nervous she had some hidden weapon behind her that the captain had spotted. Fortunately he hadn't missed any crucial detail. However, his face contorted in confusion when he heard what came out of his Captain's mouth next.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"My men and I have tracked you for weeks. I even had to give up my promotion to a post on the coast where I could have enjoyed the rich gene energy that comes with the beast tide. Do you know why? Why we followed you for thousands of miles through the cold Rolling Mountains? Even venturing now into the lair of the Death God?"
Kito's blood froze. The lair of the Death God? The taboo land where it is said multiple chiefs have failed to conquer over the millenia? Where tens of thousands of their brothers have returned to the clutch only to become gene fodder? The place with the richest known genetic energy in the nine continents?
"When did we…?" Kito was about to ask when he saw Baofa's hand pointing at Luna…or more accurately the sign behind her.
"It is the ancestral monument of the Death God isn't it? That is what you are hiding behind your back. The warning that all who profane this land will be destroyed and even their reincarnation shall be damned.
It is said in the Ipili histories that it even gives off rich genetic energy in front of the sign to reward those who have made a pilgrimage of worship. But to cross it is to guarantee everlasting damnation."
"FUCK BOSS WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN US!" When Palin and the rest of the Ipili who had gone behind Luna heard this, they paled before quickly rushing back to Baofa's side.
Luna's eyes widened in surprise. She had recognized the writing on the sign, but she had no idea about the hidden history of the Ipili involved in the area. She stepped to the side for the monument with its ancestral writing to become visible for everyone else.
Before she could speak to ask, Baofa continued. Seemingly proud of his deduction he said "Ah, I knew it. As soon as I felt the invigorating Gene energy here I thought that was what it was."
Baofa extended his neck vertically and raised his head backwards, fully exposing his neck for a few seconds and closed his eyes with his hands outspread. The ultimate form of Ipili submission, showing their vitals to an opponent or superior. After he finished the ritual of submission and respect he sharpened his gaze and looked directly at Luna.
"Knowledge is power Huli. At first, I followed a tip I bought from an Enga information peddler who said that a Huli had been spotted in the eastern lowlands traveling alone and attempting to hide their presence. She was said to be a beauty without equal once exposed by a particularly aggressive Lunga who pursued her."
"That hateful vile despicable toad! I would never lower myself to let him rut around on top of me! I should have killed him when he pulled my hood back!" Growled Luna fervently.
The Lunga were known as lustful amphibians. Powerful in water and on land, their genes would overpower the genes of any Fera they bred with…which they were extremely eager to do. Luna regretted escaping when she was first exposed instead of eliminating the transgressor himself.
"However, when I got Kito's report about wounding you and you escaping with your Glamour, I was excited. Not because of his description of your prowess or how close he was to getting you, but because of his mentioning of your glowing whiskers. A birthmark the Huli say only forms on the next generation's Saintess."
Baofa's gaze which had been brimming with pride was momentarily clouded with greed.
