Capítulo 3: Chapter 3 - Bad and Ugly

After the whole incident, I thought to my self, 'I knew this wasn't a good idea. I should have not fallen into my mothers words."

Felix felt dazed by what just occurred and he thought back to this morning. When I received the invitation my mother happened to see it first and started her usual insults against me.

She was ecstatic when I was engaged to Celeste because to her, she was the perfect daughter-in-law every mother would want of their son. She hates Sol.

She also reaped the benefits of having a direct connection to the D'Angelos that wasn't just business. So when I broke the news to her that we ended the engagement she fainted on the spot.

Despite it being years since that happened, she has been angry and livid at me. 'Celeste was perfect! She was such a kind and good girl why did you do that to her… to me?!'

No matter how often I explained that I was in love with someone else that wasn't enough for her. Because of the timing between my engagements my mother is fully convinced I cheated or did something unforgivable.

So when she saw the invitation she taunted me that despite how long ago Sol and I got engaged, I never formally debuted her to my friends or colleagues. 'See you don't love her, you are ashamed of her! Years and none of your friends or business partners even know what she looks like.'

To prove a point I called Sol on the spot to be my date and now here we are. But as I parked the car outside of Rebeccas house I felt nauseous.

The way everyone treated me when we announced the cancellation of one engagement and then the announcement of a new one was a rocky time.

No one wanted to work with me and our conglomerate took a hit. While I now may be back in everyones good books… I was scared of what they would do to Sol.

"Baby, don't scrunch your eyebrows like that. Otherwise its gonna stick. What has you so worried." I looked over at Sol who, much like her namesake, was warm and bright. I didn't want anyone to extinguish that. She didn't do anything wrong.

As she smoothed out my brows I decided to just say what was on my mind. "Honestly, I don't know how they will react. Not many 'regular' people come to these functions. So I don't want you feeling like they are purposely antagonizing you."

I closed my eyes slightly at that thought which was enough to hurt my heart. Sol stopped her movements and began to laugh out loud. She even wiped a few tears from her eyes. "That's what worrying you, listen if I can handle your mother what makes you think I can't handle some stuck up snobby rich kids."

I took her hands into mine. "Sol I am being serious. Think of this like high school right. They are the 'cool' kids who don't invite others in. Celeste, my ex, she is like the queen bee whatever she says is like the law. And- "

Sol pushed her finger to my lips to stop me words and she smiled her usual bright smile. "Watch its gonna be just fine."

'I knew it. I fucking knew it.' We should not have come. I didn't expect Cortez to be there. The fucker normally avoided these things like the plague but somehow we got 'lucky' to see him.

We would have been able to navigate ourselves out from the awkwardness but, Cortez just had to go ahead and try to make things bad and ugly. Thankfully he ended up leaving.

Just as I was about to speak and start over, everyone started to murmur and talk excitedly about what Cortez said. "They are really gonna collaborate, I wonder what's going to happen?" "I never saw this coming!" "I didn't think in my lifetime I would see those two families even cross roads this way." "Whatever it is, I expect a lot of money to be involved. I wonder how I can get in on it."

The news shook everyone and as if their pants were on fire, they started rushing to collect their things and head out. People started bidding their goodbyes and congratulations to Rebecca and Alan as they hurriedly left to presumably start investigating what's going on.

Within a matter of a few minutes only Sol and I were left.

"Sorry about that. You understand. Seems it was indeed too late for the party but don't worry, the bachelor party and wedding are next up so we can talk then." said Rebecca.

I didn't miss how she didn't mention the bachelorette party. 'Seems like Sol is going to have to come more often if she is going to be eventually included.' I collected myself and squeezed Sols' hand.

"So it seems. We will see you guys then." I pulled Sol as we started to head out and back home.

I hope she caught on to the 'we'. Despite my initial anger, if Sol is going to be my wife I need to make sure she gets connected with the right people. If I could make a turn around so could she.

As we got into the car Sol pulled my sleeve and asked. "Why did they seem so excited at what that guy said? I think you said his name is 'Cortez'?"

I was annoyed at the fact that she brought up that bastard but knew that he was inevitable and was going to pop up at some point.

"Its kinda complicated but you remember how I told you Celeste is apart of that really rich and powerful family. Well that guy, his name is actually Dean Cortez, he is also apart of a rich family that's equal in wealth and influence to hers. They are what you call 'old money'. Their families have been wealthy for generations and considered integral to building the economic powerhouse that is our country today. But they have never mixed business with one another. So them doing it now is pretty insane."

"Ohhhhhhh. Do you think then they are engaged?" I looked over at her and much like she did, I laughed out loud. Sol huffed at me and crossed here arms. "Whats funny about that?" I grabbed her hand.

"Sorry, sorry, baby. Listen the only reason I am laughing is that you only know them from what I have told you. But Celeste and Dean are total polar opposites. Those two have never gotten along since our academy days. Their personalities are just too conflicting I doubt they could even last in a marriage."

I held my stomach and took some deep breathes to recover from laughing so hard.

"I don't know babe, don't they say opposites attract? They could have feelings. After all its been few years. I doubt any sane person would stay single for that long willingly."

She was naive. "Trust me when I say those two wouldn't happen. Never in a million years."
