Capítulo 89: Chapter 86

Saturday came by faster than I had expected. I don't know how, but Austin had somehow managed to talk Kira into staying at the record store and running things in my behalf that night. She had had to lie to her parents that she was going to a sleepover at a friend's house. And I had been against the idea until Max said he was going to stay and keep her company. My main concern had been that she was a girl, and it was not safe for her to be there alone until so late at night, but knowing that she wasn't alone worked to ease my worry. Although Max now disliked Austin even more. He claimed that asking such a thing of Kira in the first place had been inconsiderate. He had so much to complain about when it came to Austin, but he lacked the courage to say them when he was around.

" Where the hell are we going?" I asked for the tenth or so time, and just like the other nine times, he refused to disclose that information. But I was determined to find out before we left because Austin sometimes did things that left me questioning his sanity. I was letting him practically lead me to an unknown destination that could possibly turn out to be anywhere.

" Just tell me! Or give me a hint at least. "

We were currently at my place, seated in the living room eating food he'd ordered less than thirty minutes ago. He insisted we eat before we left since he wasn't sure we'd get a chance to do so wherever we were going. And that made me even more worried.

He was taking me to a surprise location where food could potentially be an issue?

" Where do you plan on taking me? A jungle?... desert?... Fucking Antarctica?"

He stopped halfway through biting his pizza, his brows shooting up as he turned to look at me. Then he slowly chewed while giving me the most confused expression. As if I was the crazy one between us.

" Antarctica? And you call me random?" he mumbled to himself, although I knew he intended for me to hear him. I felt full, so I put down the slice I had been eating and reached for the bottle of apple juice he had snatched from me. But then he picked it up before I could grab it, raising it high above him afterwards and smiling mischievously at me, his eyes observing me from underneath those thick lashes that added a soft feature to his face.

" Seriously?"

I didn't have it in me to play his little petty games at the moment. My mom had disappeared again and I had spent that afternoon looking and asking around with no luck. And even though I didn't want to be thinking about her too much, I couldn't help it. I tried reaching for the bottle once, deciding to give up and just let it be if he kept up with the silly teasing, which he did. I attempted to stand, saying I was just going to get some water instead, but him being the crazy person that he was chose to raise his feet and place them on my lap. I sighed, placing my elbow on the couch's armrest and using my palm to support my head. Then I closed my eyes and chose to try and gather my thoughts.

" I'm taking you to Vegas. We'll find a little church, get married and ride off into the sunset. "

" Just eat your food. "

" Here, drink it. "

His tone suggested he wasn't playing around, so I opened my eyes and found him offering me the juice. He was trying to play it cool because being nice wasn't something he normally was. There was something about that cocky grin of his. That rebelliousness that still burnt brightly in his eyes. It was an understated feature about him but it affected me more than he'll ever know. I watched as he stretched out his hand to give me the bottle, but just as I was about to take it, he retracted his hand and chuckled softly to himself. And I watched in complete disapproval as he opened up the lid and took a large sip. But instead of swallowing it, he tried to get me to kiss him.

" Why do I love you?" I asked out loud, turning to face the other way because I didn't want to actually go. I could play around and pretend that I did, but there was nowhere see if rather be. I liked how he was finding ways to get us some time to hang out together. He knew how busy I usually was so he set out to fix that particular hindrance in our relationship. He ended up handing the bottle over, so I took it and drank half of the juice, leaving the rest for him even though he had his own. After he was done, he actually cleaned up. And I watched in fascination because it was so unlike him.

But it was getting really late. Almost nine. Where on earth did he want us to go at such a time? I knew asking him wouldn't bear any fruits, so I just leaned back against the sofa and waited, hoping it wasn't anything too weird and crazy.

After he was done, he came over and laid back with his head ony lap, but he was in that position for less than five minutes before his phone rang. I noticed that it was Miles calling. He picked it up, listened for a bit and replied with the singular word..."cool," before he stood up and said it was the for us to go.

Miles was waiting outside. Inside this truck that seemed almost new but which I was sure wasn't. Maybe they just had so many vehicles that some were rarely even used. I narrowed my gaze when I saw Austin's bike at the back of the said truck. And there was also someone else seated at the front, this guy that seemed older than the average highschool student. He was wearing a Yankee's hat and this cool brown leather jacket with metal spikes on the shoulder pads. Rings on almost all his fingers and a neck tattoo peaking from the collar of his jacket. The caramel of his skin matched everything he had on perfectly.

" Ssup Austin, " he greeted after we got in the backseat and locked the doors. He gave the guy a curt nod. And I felt slightly uncomfortable because I hadn't known we'd be traveling with company. Miles was okay I suppose, but I just didn't like being around strangers.

" Hey Kyle, how's it going?" Miles asked..He was seated at the driver's seat, and he had glanced back so that he could look at us.

" I'm good, thanks for asking."

" This is my buddy Will, "

I nodded and smiled at the guy. Miles started driving, and they started engaging in a conversation that left me completely clueless because I had no idea what they were talking about. I was starting to feel out of place, and it was only when Austin scooted over and held my hand did I relax. It was a small gesture, but I suppose it reassured me that I was still in his head. And that he still considered me a priority. It became clear that we were leaving Boulder, but I didn't ask any questions. I just hoped we weren't going too far.

" Where's the jacket I gave you to wear?" He suddenly asked. I looked down at myself, and the simple sweatshirt I had on. We had just eaten, so I had taken off the jacket and placed it aside because of the warmth, but I had intended in carrying it along.

" Shit! I forgot it. "

" See? Told you not to take it off. "

" It's fine. I'm not even cold. "

" Sure?"

I nodded, but he still held my hand in both of his as if to confirm it, then he reached out and wrapped his hand around my neck.

" You might not be now but later on... definitely. "

He shook his head.

" You shouldn't have taken it off. "

" He can have mine, I'm way overdressed anyways, " Miles offered. There was a chance he was being honest, I mean, he was wearing a hoodie with a denim jacket on top. He even started to take it off, I assured him I was okay because it was basic principle for me to do so,and he insisted on giving it to me because of the same reason. So with his eyes on the road, he carefully took off the jacket and handed it over without looking. Austin took it from him and I thanked him. In truth, I was starting to feel cold and I knew that it was only going to get worse. I went to take the jacket from him but he kept it aside, then he took off his own, the black leather with the white fur on the collar, and he gave it to me instead.

" Here, put this on," he instructed without much thought. Placing it on my lap and putting on the denim Miles had offered.

I didn't get why he'd done that, and judging by their expressions, neither did the two guys seated at the front, but neither made a mention of it. Maybe they were also used to Austin and his odd ways.

Miles drove on. We had passed a sign that welcomed us to Denver. And not long after, he was taking quite a number of turns. Then he finally got to this place that looked like a dark alley. I couldn't see anyone but I could hear some pretty loud noises. I became even more weary.
