Capítulo 44: Ergus the demented (part 2)

"Who is Veriont?

Bellamy who was still leaning above Wyatt asked.

Wyatt who was still reading through the journal flipped the page toward the second entry while responding. "No idea, but considering that they refer to them as young master, they must be some sort of noblemen."

Bel nodded his head in agreement before responding "They also said they entered Zigural, so a noble from another kingdom is targeting Zigural?"

"I'm thinking the same, hopefully, the rest of the entries help explain more" Wyatt replied

[Entry 2]

[April 24th: Under the command of Sir Ergus we traveled for 6 days straight before arriving at the Pelliot mountain range. In order to stay completely hidden from locals during this trip, we avoided all towns and roads. The young master chose this area for us because it's surrounded by mountains on one side and a large forest on the other.

According to locals besides the occasional person collecting ingredients nearby, rarely anybody ever enters this region......]

After explaining why they chose the area the rest of the entry was the writer complaining about the conditions of their travels, and having to sleep outside in the forest. Not wanting to waste time, Wyatt started quickly scanning through the journal for any relevant information

[Entry 5]

[...after settling into our new base last month, we immediately sent a messenger back home in order to confirm our success, as well as request the first round of reinforcements. If everything continues as planned, the second team should arrive within Zigural in roughly 3 weeks.]

[Entry 6]

[May 5th: Due to our group being the first arrivals, Sir Ergus has forced strict restrictions on us. In order to not expose our movements, our usual hunting methods for collecting new creatures have been limited to only a few hours a night. Sir Ergus has also limited the number of monsters we can collect at once out of fear of causing any irregularities in the natural habitat.

While I was taking a break earlier today, I overheard some of the older alchemists complaining that their stock of experimental ingredients is already starting to thin. Luckily I don't require any monster parts for my potion brewing.]

[May 8th: Today a few alchemists got into an argument with Sir Ergus over the lack of quality supplies. Donovan promised young master Veriont that before the second group arrives in Zigural he would've already created enough chimeras to survey the southern region of the Zigural kingdom.

Originally this plan was created to help the newer arrivals find locations for their hidden bases, while also letting us test the security of the kingdom before we launch any full scale attacks. Due to the lack of monster corpses, the older alchemists have already started to fall behind schedule]

"Interesting.." Wyatt mumbled out loud while reading through the entries.

"At least we confirmed our earlier guess was correct! a foreign noble really was targeting Zigural. But now that just leaves even more questions" he stated while searching through the multiple entries for more information.

Bellamy, who was still listening along nodded his head in agreement before replying

"We still have no clue why they are targeting Zigural or the reason they abandoned this place"

Unfortunately for the duo, their first question would remain unanswered even after skimming through the rest of the journal entries. Most of the writer's notes simply contained their complaints about the work environment.

After roughly 10 minutes of searching for anything else of interest within the journal, Wyatt was able to pick out two details that interested him.

The first point was about the leader of the foreigners, Sir Ergus. According to the journal, Ergus is a relatively young and inexperienced knight. Most of the issues the alchemists faced while staying here were directly related to Ergus's poor performance.

Apparently, the punishment for failing this mission would be terrifying, and with this being his first time in charge Ergus faltered into a passive overcautious mindset which quickly slowed the group's progress.

This led to a couple of major arguments between Ergus and the leader of the alchemists named Donovan.

After Finally forcing Ergus to be more proactive, an unexpected incident occurred. Instead of waiting till night once again, Ergus headed out to collect more corpses in the afternoon. At first, he didn't run into any problems, until on his journey back to the hideout Ergus ran into a group of patrolling guards who entered the forest in order the thin out any overpopulating beasts.

Due to his nerves, instead of playing things off naturally, Ergus freaked out before running away from the guards in a hurry. He succeeded in returning back to base unfollowed before informing the group of the run in.

This was when things went from bad to worse for the group. After hearing about the events, many of the alchemists wanted to immediately abandon their hideout in fear of losing their lives.

Ergus on the other hand strongly opposed this idea. If the group abandoned their base now, they would completely fall behind schedule. Ergus being in charge of course meant that he would have to take the majority of the blame for such a failure.

The second point that stuck out to Wyatt during this actually had nothing to do with the intruder's plans at all. According to the writer of the journal, the group actually contained a member who wasn't an alchemist. Instead, this member was referred to as a toxicologist.

Clearly, this job had something to do with poison, and with Wyatt still being completely oblivious when it came to what sub class to choose, his interest was quickly piqued
