The crowd cheered for their respective teams, the commentators talked about the lineups as well as the more popular players which the public followed from middle school up to this point.
It was shaping up to be a good game and all Paul could do was watch, somehow at first when Joseph asked him to take the job. He felt like it was an easy task. A no-brainer. But he's not the one on the field, his job is to make the people going onto the field ready for the task they were about to take on and that was harder than anyone could imagine.
The camera flashes were new to some, Byron for one had seen them before most noticeably in the preliminary match against Horace. Though the camera flashes were for the other team's ace. "So big."
"I know what you mean." Arthur tried loosening him up. Which didn't work by the way.
Byron stared at the pitch as both teams got into formation, he was about to walk toward the kick-off line but he remembered he wasn't picked for this match as a striker. He looked at Nagisa who seemed to be in what came off like another world. "Was he always that focused?"

"Two very stacked lineups so far, with one team being more stacked than the other don't you think Joe?" The first commentator said to his partner who sat by him.
"Yes Terry, Marion's squad has players that the media called 'The next legends' and I can't wait to see if they can live up to the claims," Joe responded.
"It's only a matter of time at this point, the match would soon begin and from then on it'll be a battle of perspectives. Luthervale has always agreed that teamwork is dreamwork and while Marion agrees with that as well, I doubt that they would have been able to make a team with the caliber of players on board." Terry looked at some papers.
"Especially after their friendly loss to Tenzin, their confidence might be low but this is the best chance for revenge they could have."
"Let's see as they do," Terry dropped his papers and looked at the players.
Byron stretched as everyone assumed their positions, for some reason he had never seen this view before. The pitch was so much wider and it stunned him. He didn't like that he wasn't playing up front but right now. He wouldn't trade this view for the world.
Luthervale won the coin toss so their strikers started the match, Ivanovic passed to Zack before going back to his own position.
Paul and the others had made Luthervale seem like this singular organism that performs using the same brain and he wanted to see it in action. Their so-called perfected 'teamwork'.
Zack ran with the ball and once Max came up he passed it over to Roy who ran down the wing, a 4-3-3 formation put a lot more bodies into the fray than other formations did, it's well-balanced and accepts the kind of play that Luthervale wanted to create.
Arthur pressed Roy on the wing and managed to snatch the ball from him, a careless mistake by Roy gave Marion the chance to attack and they were going to take it. Xiao ran in alongside Max and some midfielders trying to link up for a pass or a lob into the box.
Arthur was about to be pressed by Luthervale's midfield so he looked into the box and spotted Max. "Take it forward," Arthur said as he crossed the ball to Max who was still outside the box.
"Unrealistic expectations to be honest." Max looked behind him trying to make sure he covered the ball from any poachers. The ball dropped down and Max ran with it, but immediately Max saw a defender he passed it to Xiao.
"Too fast," Byron said as he ran trying to catch up to Liam who already cemented himself in a nice position where he could receive a pass and start a play.
"Liam," Xiao passed the ball to Liam and ran toward the defender, he was trying to stay behind him for a quick run inside but the defenders counteracted and went up a little bit more.
"Crap." Liam was about to lob the ball so Xiao could score a volley but it would seem Luthervale knew that was the case. "Byron." Liam passed to Byron and backed away trying to create space between Byron and him.
The Luthervale defense came up, standing a few meters away from the box and that was where they stood their ground. An offside trap was best used while the ball was in play but with the way Luthervale used it. It was almost like a wall that had a hole in the middle, a big hole anyone could pass through but if your timing wasn't spot on. The hole would close and swallow you up.
Byron received the ball and it was the first time he touched the ball during the match, he wasn't skilled enough to hit the pass just well enough that it would pass the defense and allow Xiao to score. So what would he do?
Cody came and tackled Byron but he didn't lose the ball this time, Byron passed the ball back to Liam and examined the defense of Luthervale.
Liam didn't want to waste the attack with a bad ball in so he passed to Silvestre who already came up, he knew Nagisa was on the left and could possibly run down to create a chance via cross-in but Luthervale guarded him tighter than they did Arthur.
"Complete shut down." Cory looked at his papers and then ticked something off on them. "Ha-Jun might've been a good pick for this match, no?"
"Regardless of severity, they are still recovering from
injury. The only reason they were put in the main lineup was due to the fact their skills would become needed in the second and third stages." Paul said looking at the state of the match.
"We have to win this stage first." Cory sighed.
"Don't worry, it might take him some time but I believe he'll show up."
"Who?" Cory asked and Paul didn't respond. "Watch the match I guess."
Arthur passed the ball to Liam and Liam passed to Silvestre and Silvestre passed to Byron. They were in Luthervale's half but due to the offside trap they put up, they couldn't go any further. "I'll just go for it!" Liam prepped himself for a pass but right before he passed he saw Byron running toward the defense.
"What's he doing?" Xiao looked at Byron as he was coming forward and for some reason, the defender behind him went backward.
"Oh...Now I see what you're planning." Liam crossed the ball into the box and with Byron already making a beeline for it, the defenders were conflicted.
"Crap, Brian get the ball!" Harrison said and immediately Brian moved out of his position to get the ball, Byron stopped and both Xiao and Max pressed on forward.
"They got us!" Samson and the other defenders chased the strikers who got in behind but there was no way they could stop them.
Brian tried making a clearance without turning back but just before his boot made contact with the ball, Max jostled him off it and hit the ball toward Xiao who made sure he blasted it into the top corner.
"Goooooallllll!!!!" Terry shouted. "Marion has the first laugh! And they're leading by 1. We expected this but for it to come within the first 20 minutes of the game,"
"It's just brilliant Terry, the midfielder made a dummy run in and once the defenders backed off the two strikers in front pounced and created a spectacular goal. Hopefully, this is just one of the many that will come into this match."
Cory and Annabel celebrated and although Paul didn't let his emotions show, he was happy on the inside. "Now I see why Joseph was so adamant."
"You cheeky boy." Liam jumped on Byron. "Timing it perfectly with my cross so it would seem like a planned move."
Byron laughed as he returned to his position, he had never made a dummy run with the intentions he just had before. As a striker whenever he made a dummy run, he was always upfront and kept himself in a position where he could still put the ball back in if the player missed but that wasn't what he did just now. He stopped after making the run and he let the strikers do their job.
"I'm not making my case any easier, if you want to be a striker you have to score. Assisting will only prove Joseph's point." Byron spoke to himself but not even he could deny the amount of joy he felt right now. The amount of freedom he felt.
Golden patterned feathers sprouted from his back and it was as if he could go anywhere on the pitch, he had never felt this before, he had never felt anything like this before. Is this what a midfielder feels like?
Luthervale came up with the ball and Marion attacked with confidence and the confidence wasn't just on the pitch, Paul, Cory and the bench players could also feel the confidence with them being one up but the spirits of Luthervale weren't down.
It seemed like this was what they wanted as if they were testing Marion so they could grasp how they played and that was when it began. Gilbert passed to Samson and from there. They passed and passed until it reached Zack who scored to equalize the game.
Marion started their attack but once they got in deep, Cody nicked the ball and from there. They passed and passed again until they managed to make Yuri come out and another goal was scored by Zack. It wasn't halftime yet and the scores had already turned on their head. With the team that started the match hot, being the team that was down 2 goals to 1.
"This is unbelievable," Joe said as he watched the match unfold in front of him.
In the span of ten minutes Luthervale took the lead over Marion using passing that no midfielder or defender could interrupt, even when a pass went awry there was always a player there to receive it.
"Crud...." Byron said panting as the referee restarted the match. "It's not so much their passing but,"
"Their coordination." Nagisa came close to Byron. "The reason their so coordinated is Cody Stillen, his work rate is just absurd. He doesn't stick to his position, he drops in low and comes up high. That's why we couldn't pick the ball off them, it's because he was always there. He's an exceptional all-round player just like Danny."
"So should the coach have put Danny in the subs then?" Byron wiped the sweat on his forehead.
"It doesn't matter who we sub in, if we don't find a way to take care of Cody we'll lose." Nagisa walked back to his wing as the game restarted.
"Works like a horse, is a jack of all trades and he's as flexible as spandex. Never knew Tristan was hiding such a player." Cory said as he and Annabel prepped the water bottles.
Paul didn't need to look at his bench, he already knew who he needed to sub in for the match but he wasn't going to sub him in unless he asked for it. "You know this is what your skillset entails so what's it gonna be? Are you gonna watch and wait till another goal is added to their tally or are you gonna speak up and show me what the team was missing out on, Xavier."
Xavier sat on the bench amidst the chatter from the subs but he heard nothing, he focused on Cody's play style like it was a test. He was enchanted at first because the Luthervale player was everything he wanted to be and more. "What do you lack," Xavier asked himself as he watched Cody run back and front on the pitch. Covering distance, providing support and picking up loose balls. "This is gonna be a hard one."
Sorry I haven't uploaded in a while, needed to sort out some stuff irl.
A dust cloud kicked up throwing sand and clutter everywhere, the city of Texas was quite the peaceful one. The sun shined, the days passed and everyone went about their day, and although the town hadn't been in the news that much. There was something, or rather, someone that was making strides.
The ball was going wide but just before it crossed the line Ethan stopped it and had a look into the box. The scores were 2-0 and they wanted to seal it off with one more goal. "One, two, three." Ethan ran down with the ball down the left wing and a defender followed. Both defender and attacker were side by side but by using a move that involved passing the ball in front and catching up to it the attacker slipped past and crossed the ball into the box.
"Leave it," Gabe told the 3 other defenders, as he headed the ball back out of the box.
"Crap," Ethan shouted as his cross was cleared.
The defense had already been jubilating because of Gabe's clearance and since the ball was already set to drop at the feet of one of their midfield, the defenders didn't move from their spot.
"Here's fine." Before the ball hit the ground he tapped it with his chest and centered it. The ball was outside the box and hitting from here would be difficult because even if the strike was perfect, there were too many bodies in the box.
"Nice we have our first goal," Ethan said and smiled.
The defense used their bodies as a shield just in case, but there were all sure that nobody could strike the ball perfectly through them and the keeper. It was impossible... not for him, however.
The midfield ran toward him trying to take the ball but before they caught up, he struck the ball and the oh-so-impossible goal ended in the back of the net. Searing in through the goal's top left corner.
He ran and celebrated with his friends because with this final goal, he had completed his hat-trick and they could move on to the next preliminary match in the tournament.
"That's my boy! Good going, Xavier." Ian, who was the coach of the team praised his player.
"That's our ace!" Ethan said as he hugged Xavier.
The Harvey town Wanderers was the name of the team he played for. He was possibly their best player and because he was exceptionally talented in almost all parts of play they called him their ace, the team that had never had a chance at winning or even competing in a tournament had finally found the player that would lead them to victory and his name was Xavier Leon Frederick.
They were at home for their first two games, meaning that the opposing team would come to play them. "Helios? for our second tournament match!? c'mon tell me your kidding."
"It's what the board sent." Tory, the team's trainer said.
Helios wasn't known as the team that won all the tournaments in recent times but playing them was a nightmare, if he had to pick the one team that had everything a club could've needed it was them. Their defense, midfield and attack were as pristine as it gets. "To be honest, I think this is where our tournament run ends."
"Coach," Tory said.
"I'll win the game for us coach," Xavier stepped into the conversation. "I'll carry the team to victory."
Both the coach and trainer looked at themselves and laughed, if their players hadn't given up yet. Who were they to? "Let's get ready for the match then, ace."
Helios had arrived by 2 in the afternoon for the second preliminary bout of the tournament. Both teams had scored hattricks in their first game, making this an equal game between them.
The referee started the match and it was going well. A counterattack by the wanderers led the ball through the right wing and into the path of Xavier who scored a stunning volley. Another attack was created by snatching the ball from a defender, which led Xavier to score again. It was the 61st minute and everything was going well. Until 3 players were subbed on by Helios.
"Here he comes."
Isaac, Young and Elochukwu didn't even warm up before they came into the match. They subbed off Randolph, Finn and Warren who were all attackers.
"I gotta give it to you," Victor said. "Your team was much stronger than I expected, didn't think we'd need to play any of our starting eleven."
Ian looked at the coach of Helios as he spoke, he was hoping this wouldn't happen. "Just, defend guys, keep the ball in our half, let's run the clock."
"Run the clock?" Victor laughed. "It doesn't matter if there's 5 or 3 minutes left, you've already lost."
The net rattled and Ian looked at the pitch, the scores were already 2-1 and the goal scorer was none other than Isaac Maridan.
Ian got up and subbed off 3 of the defenders, strengthening their defense was what they needed right now. If Helios were to score again and tie the match, there was no way they were going to win through extra time.
"Run the clock!" Ian and Tory shouted.
"Sure, coach." Xavier got passed the ball and ran down with it, Isaac came over to mark him. They ran down with the ball, jostling for possession as Xavier tried to shake him off.
"So your are the ace of this team," Isaac said as he put pressure on Xavier.
"Ethan!" Xavier shouted as he passed the ball but right as he passed, the path of the ball was blocked by a foot. "Crap"
"Disappointing." Isaac ran down with the ball toward the Wanderer's post and Xavier chased him, sweat poured from the ace's body as he tried to catch up to Isaac. He panted and panted as he swung his arms and feet, but there was no way he was going to catch up to a player that ran as fast as Usain.
Another goal was scored, and then another, and then another, and then another. The scores were 5-2 and all the dreams that the Wanderers had up to this point, were shattered by one player.
Xavier coughed as he rested on the pitch, sweat dropped from his face and water from his eyes. He resisted the urge to cry but nature took its turn.
He heard footsteps walk toward him and right as he looked up, all he could see was the face of the man that crushed his dreams.
"I heard there was an ace in the team, scored a hat-trick and all that." Isaac knelt down next to him and whispered into his ear. "You aren't an ace, you're not even good enough to be on the bench. Playing with weak players and against weak opponents must've really inflated your ego. One word of advice, quit." He spat on the ground before he left.
These words were just to rattle him surely, but deep down he knew those weren't the claims of someone that just wanted to get a reaction out of him. He truly meant that. "Damnit," Xavier hit his hand on the ground and cried even more. "Just damnit!"
For the next year, there had been no word of a player by the name of Xavier or a team by the name of the Wanderers. After the loss to Helios, he ran away, changed schools and never played football after that. He changed his mind and followed the path his mom wanted him to, he went to acting school on the side and sold pastries at his mom's place of work.
He missed the sport very dearly but he knew his skill with the ball was no more than a fluke, when put up against another talented player. He was demolished. "Dad I'm home," Xavier said as he walked through the door.
"Xavier come over here." His dad said.
"One sec," He hung his bag on the coat rack and walked into the living room, where he had heard his dad's voice call him from.
"Hello, Xavier." Another man who was in the living room with his dad called out to him.
"Hi. Umm, dad." Xavier looked at his father.
"Have a seat son," His dad told him to and he did just that. "Sir, how about you explain it all to him."
"Okay, my name is Joseph Trumann and I'm the head coach as well as the main scout for Marion high. We'd love to have you be a part of our team and school."
"Marion. That's California, that's far away from here. I'm sorry I can't do it. Plus, I don't want to play football anymore."
"Why?" Joseph asked.
"Why?" Xavier said, shocked that Joseph asked. "I'm not good at it."
"Then we'll train you, I know your history and your just the player we need in our midfield."
"Please, just... I'm just going be a burden, I'll just drag you all down."
"Leon..." his father thought.
"That's not true. I wouldn't be here if I saw a bad quality in you. Your positional awareness, your intensity when playing, your defensive prowess, your long-range passes and your accuracy from outside the box. Trust me, Xavier. Marion needs you."
Xavier fell on his knees and started crying, he had given up because he knew it was just a fluke that would be lucky to get into a D-rated team but here he was. The coach of one of the greatest high-school teams, Marion.
"Are you in Leon?" His dad looked at his son.
Xavier took a breath in. He didn't want to leave his parents behind but he didn't want to give up soccer either.
"It's fine. I and your mom are gonna be just fine."
"Dad."
"Do what you have to do, we'll support you wholeheartedly. Even if she doesn't, I'll make her understand."
Xavier hugged his dad tightly, the same man that bought him his first ball had just permitted him to follow his dreams. There was no better feeling that the one he felt right now. "Thanks, dad,"
"No problem kiddo,"
"Mr. Trumann. I'm in."
"There are still some procedures yet to be fulfilled but we'll cross that bridge when we get there." Joseph brought his hand out and he and Xavier shook hands. "Welcome to Marion, Xavier."
The roar of the crowd was enough to give anyone a headache, but for the players. It was a burst of adrenaline. He sat there until the whistle went for half time, he didn't know if he was the player the team needed but he knew more than anyone that he and Cody shared the same skill set. "I'm not losing to him," Xavier got up and walked toward Paul. "Sub me in coach."
"You sure?" Paul looked at his face.
"I'm sure."
"The face of someone ready to make a difference regardless of how scared they might be. Go get 'em, tiger." Paul tapped his player's back and smiled.
The match restarted after going for the halftime break and the referee stopped the game one more time for a substitution by Marion. Arthur was the one coming off and although some of the bench players might've not understood the reason for the move, the player's on the pitch certainly did.
Arthur took off the captain's armband as he ran to Xavier. "This is yours now, take care of the team." He slapped his back and ran to the bench.
The old him would've been crying right now but that wasn't going to happen. He put on the armband and ran onto the pitch.
"Hey, Xavier." Byron said as Xavier ran next to him. "How do you feel."
"Nervous, scared, wanna bury myself in a hole." Xavier blew hot air into his hands.
"You'll be fine." Byron laughed.
"Let's win this." Xavier looked at Byron and held out his fist.
"Haha, you're like a completely different person all of a sudden." Byron stretched his arm out as well and completed the fist bump. "But of course, let's win this. Captain."
Sorry for the late chapter, making this was a little bit more difficult that I’d thought it would be.
