Capítulo 190: Knowledge

"Sure, just give me a moment to get your application form ready. Can I have your ID card, please?" The receptionist maintained a high level of professionalism, even though Jack might not have recognized it. Nevertheless, Jack appreciated the courteous explanation and handed over his ID card. After swiping it for verification, the receptionist printed out an information sheet and handed it to Jack, along with his identity details uploaded to the system.

Additionally, she provided some special instructions: "The assessment for Jaeger designers will be quite thorough, involving various tests. Once you've filled out the application form, specialized staff will guide you through the process."

"Thank you," Jack nodded appreciatively and then moved to a nearby table to start filling out the form.

The form required basic identity information and a rundown of Jack's knowledge.

Jack had already perused all his identification documents in this world on his way here. With his exceptional memory, he had them all committed to memory. He swiftly jotted down the required details. The only section that gave him pause was the one on "mastery of knowledge."

After a brief hesitation, Jack began to write.

Materials engineering, computer engineering, communication, Jaegernical design, nuclear physics, fluid Jaegernics, neural sensing, dynamics, environmental adaptation, hydraulics...

Jack organized and categorized the vast array of knowledge in his mind and then outlined it on the form.

Even so, he felt it wasn't enough at the moment.

Meanwhile, in a nearby office, a man sat with his thermos cup, taking a sip of coke when he heard a notification sound.

"Sounds familiar?"

The man perked up, tracing the source of the sound to an electronic device on his desk, its red light blinking insistently.

After a brief moment of pondering, realization dawned on him, and he let out an involuntary gasp.

Coke splattered in every direction.

Swiftly, he rose to his feet, grabbing a tissue to mop up the mess.

Confusion lingered for a beat before he snatched up his tablet and rushed out.

There was no choice; he was the sole member in the department entrusted with the responsibilities of a Jaeger designer liaison. If he didn't step in... who else would?

In the department's nascent days, there were elaborate protocols and a full roster of staff.

Yet, as is often the case, competence isn't guaranteed solely by credentials and resumes. While many certified individuals proved capable, it wasn't fair to discount those without formal qualifications.

Even though the government had scoured the nation for potential Jaeger designers, there were still uncertainties—missed opportunities, reluctant talents, or those who had a change of heart.

Hence, a dedicated liaison department became essential.

Over time, however, interest waned. As years passed since the first appearance of monsters, fewer dared to try their luck as Jaeger designers. Reality set in for most.

And so, the department fell idle.

With wartime demands and limited resources, the national organization couldn't sustain a surplus of idle hands. Personnel were reassigned, one by one.

Until finally, Stephan remained—the last man standing, juggling myriad responsibilities from reception to evaluation, data management to communication.

"It seems like there's a lot to keep busy with, but as long as nobody shows up, it's just an easy gig!" Stephan mused to himself, reflecting on his two years at the job. Initially, he had big ambitions, but now it felt like he was just going through the motions, soaking wolfberry and salted fish in warm water.

In those two years, only one person had shown up for assessment, and that was due to a system glitch assigning the wrong person. Stephan hurried to the hall, finally having a moment to glance at the information of the person he was assessing.

"Damn, so young?" Stephan muttered under his breath as he read Jack's age.

Feeling a pang of disappointment, Stephan thought, "It's hard enough to get applicants, and now they're sending someone this young? Who would believe it!"

This wasn't about physical prowess like being a Jaeger pilot; here, knowledge was key.

But duty called, and Stephan approached Jack, drawn in by his striking appearance. As he peeked at the information Jack was filling out, Stephan couldn't help but be surprised.

When Jack finished, Stephan's mouth fell open slightly in astonishment. "This guy's got some guts!" he thought, impressed by Jack's writing. "Could he have actually memorized the name of all these degrees?"
