I grind my teeth. At least I know Giovanni's safe because he didn't look like he was hurt or anything. I quickly look up to check if someone can hear me, then make my voice lower, "If you did, then they might suspect someone's been spying on them. And if they do, then maybe they decided to do their meetings elsewhere."

"I heard you and that boss of yours, Severino's bastard son, have been getting close."

Bastard son? Does he mean literally or was that an insult? I feel queasy all of a sudden.

"You mean Giovanni? I don't know what you're talking about. He's my boss. He's good to everyone." And really, who tells him these things? Is his other spy also working at The Manor, or are they a patron? I keep forgetting I'm not the only one my father has there. I just don't know what to look out for. My heart beats faster.
