Evan Caldwell was the one who brought the scrawny child from the poor village into the Caldwell mansion.
When his father caught sight of the poor boy, he told Evan that he "had a bad taste in picking human beings".
Evan laughed it off. He thought that Ryan would start to cry immediately, but he did not. The little boy stared at Lord Marcus Caldwell instead. There was neither fear nor indignation in his eyes, only awe and surprise.
Although vampires typically renamed the human children who they adopted into the families, Evan did not want to force Ryan into accepting a new name.
"Do you like your name?" he asked the little boy.
"Yes," Ryan said. "My mom gave it to me."
"Then you should keep the name," Evan had said with a smile on his lips. "It is a keepsake from your mother."
