Capítulo 33: Car ride

Brick and Homer drove through the gates and headed down the road where they had rarely encountered a zombie blocking their path.

Those that were nearby and heard the noise created by the car wandered towards it but were much too slow to keep up even though the car was driving at a slow and steady pace.

If Brick had not made preparations beforehand at the gate then getting through that road would have been a lot harder and the car would have suffered some damage from having to knock down many zombies that blocked the path.

If that had happened so soon then it was unlikely that the car would last the whole way there and back.

They kept a pace to be able to outrun the zombies and to be able to lose them but not fast enough that any loss of control over the car would be lost.

Even if there were believed to be not many people outside during the first couple of days, there were those that were seeking opportunities outside and were aiming to leave the city as soon as possible.

It would not be strange to suddenly have an out of control car suddenly head towards them on one of the roads or someone may try to take the car by force.

Brick had constantly commented to remain vigilant at all times towards Homer and had went over the plan of action once they had got closer to the location where Tanya was. "We cannot simply park the car somewhere out in the open once we reach close to our destination. How about here?"

He pointed towards a point on the map where there had been a several story open car park that was opposite the hotel."

Homer took a quick look and nodded. "Mm.. that would be for the best if we can get inside."

Brick nodded as he had agreed. "You are right. It would be best to have a backup plan, the entrance could be blocked off or it may be closed off. How about here if we cannot enter?"

Homer nodded in agreement and turned to quietly focus on driving. "…"

Brick looked out of the window and had seen some people peeking out of their windows once they heard the car but they were too fearful to leave the house to take the chance to ask for help. 'The novel did describe the state of the city many times along with many other areas around the world. This is truly fitting of an urban apocalyptic setting and it feels so much more real now that I have left the Reed Residence.'

There was less of a sense of danger within the place he had started compared to what he found outside the walls, the people outside were already driven to desperation and the streets were a mess from the anarchy that humans and zombies had created.

There had been far more turning on their fellow humans once they needed to fight for resources and had abandoned those they were with to the zombies so that they could survive.

Those that had not yet adjusted were still hiding away or had been killed while others were relying on those that had been brave enough to take on the dangers ahead of them at the expense of risking their own lives.

Those that Brick had met so far had not experienced as much despair as those outside and even if they had lost loved ones, most of them had still worked alongside Brick to clear the Reed Residence.

There was only some smaller areas where there could be potential conflicts but they had chosen to work together to overcome the threat and to clear the zombies from around their homes.

They had solidarity due to them all being a part of the same place from the beginning and they had known each other enough to let them adjust to working with them.

It was like Brick had started out in an easy difficulty setting while others were placed in a high difficulty setting.

There were dangers from the environment that had not completely fallen into the worst possible situation, humans and zombies that could appear at any time.

He had experienced a more orderly environment while everyone else had faced absolute chaos.

The car was driving and both Brick and Homer had continued to drive further through the city and had caught glimpses of some people who were running through the streets being chased by zombies.

A man carried a little girl as he ran but tripped, his body fell down onto the ground along with the little girl in his arms.

The next moment, a zombie had climbed onto his body and more had surrounded him as the screams of him and the little girl could be heard by those nearby until they became silent.

A young woman had seen the car and had ran into the road while being chased by a zombie.

Brick watched as she was getting closer to the car as it drove towards her so Brick had sighed in annoyance. "Keep driving. Go around her if possible but do not stop for anything."

He was not willing to be a saviour of every person that came across his path especially when he had a mission to complete and his power had yet to awaken.

Even if he had gained an ability and had raised it to a higher level of power, he would not choose to take the risk to stop and help every stranger.

They were coming to be seen more as humans to Brick and were no longer just characters in a novel but that did not mean that he was willing to risk his life for them.

It was not just the zombies that were a threat in the early days of the apocalypse where humans were still vulnerable to average everyday occurrences that they had been vulnerable to before the apocalypse.

A simple car crash, a hit to the head or a bullet would still be effective and all it took was one careless person to cause such things or for someone to betray Brick.

He did not have the room in the car or the time to spend to see if a person he had just met could be trusted or relied on.

There were many kinds of traps that could be used in the apocalypse that were also a thing that had to be considered which were people looking helpless and requesting help so they could make them stop or lure them into a trap.

There was the additional factor that Shane Reed would blame him if anything went wrong during the retrieval of his daughter.

The car turned a little and bumped into the side of the woman due to her failing to move out of the way which had caused her to fall over and the zombies caught up to her.

Brick looked back and saw the zombies surround her and placed his palm over his face. 'We clearly were not stopping so why put yourself in danger like that… I know that you were desperate and that led to such a situation.. even if I had considered stopping, Homer would have still continued driving regardless of the situation.'
