Tiny teeth gnawed at the back of my mind, goblins of doubt doing their worst. Good thing Ellis was asleep or there might have been an outburst.

He’d been so distant lately and was even working while he stayed home with our baby. Poor Hope balanced dangerously on his knee as he worked.

Or so Anthony told me. I’d even seen it myself a few times, refusing to believe it otherwise. Of everyone I knew, he was the one I thought least likely to backslide.

The early years weren’t all roses, as my flight to Europe proved. It had taken nearly two years to properly build back trust after the kidnapping he had helped organize, even if it was unintentionally. He hadn’t done anything directly, and that was the problem. Had he called the cops on Carl at the time, or at least thrown him out it never would have happened.
