It was strange how knowing something was wrong with his mother brought him out of his apathetic mood.

His wings fluttered open, and he rapidly pursued Kane into the morning sky back to the castle. As his chest tightened, Deacon noticed a thickening in his throat.

He brushed away the tears in his eyes using the back of his hand. 

Having treated the woman he called 'momma' in the manner he did earlier made him feel guilty.

  The castle was in chaos when Kane arrived. The butler looked frightened when he saw Lord Alexsander appear. 

"Where is she?" he demanded in a clipped tone. 

Unable to answer fast enough, the butler pointed to their second-floor bedroom. The servants were busy bringing supplies to the bedchamber as Kane strode past them.
