Capítulo 63: 5.11

As Helena and Arizona walked down the hallway, ready to treat their patient for the day, they talked. Because of the resident's unrelenting interest for pediatric surgery they had been spending a lot of time together and, because of their compatible personalities, they'd quickly become friends.

"Meeting Calliope's dad was so not in her agenda for today. He seems like the kind of man that needs a little preparation before meeting his daughter's girlfriend." Arizona told her, giggling. "You should have seen the look on his face."

"I can only imagine. I just hope he takes it well, it sucks when your family can't accept you." Helena let out, sighing. "I mean, Georgie has told me about when he met her dad, let's just say, the man doesn't seem like the calmest person. "

"Yeah, thankfully, he seems to draw the line at throwing women against walls." Arizona smiled.

However, just then, their patient's father came out of the room, warning. "Dr. Robbins, it's Jessica. She just had a seizure, she can't breathe."

"She's got Tay-Sachs." The attending informed, rushing her resident as they ran into the room. "We need to get a mask on her, and crank it up to 15 litters."

Doing as told, Helena got the mask, putting it to the girl's mouth as Arizona attempted to calm the small girl.

——

After taking care of the child, Arizona and Helena stood outside her room, where the blond explained.

"Tay-Sachs is always fatal in children. Usually by the age of four or five. She's six." At that, Helena shot her a sad smile, looking at the small girl in the hospital bed.

"I spoke to my friend who's doing the fun raising for Jessica and he told me about this place in Mexico." The father started, hopeful. "They do experimental stem cell therapy. In a couple of weeks, we'll have enough money to..."

"Matt, Jessica doesn't have a couple weeks. I think it's quite possible she only has a couple hours." Arizona explained. "We've talked about this. We've talked about his a lot. And now it's here. And I know it's hard, I know it's impossible. But we've done everything we can and you have done everything that you can."

"No. No, listen, all we need is a little more time!" The man disagreed, crying. "Ok, if you read about these treatments..." Matt dropped the paper sheets on the ground, accidentally, the two doctors bending down to help him pick them up. "I don't mean to insult you, I know you've done everything. We just need a few more days, ok? I just need a little more time. She's a fighter, you know that she's fight-"

"Matt!" The blond interrupted him. "She's not gonna make it to Mexico. And I am so sorry, but the best thing you can do now is to be here."

"No!" The man yelled, throwing the papers on the ground as Helena watched, biting the inside of her cheek. "You don't tell me what's best. You tell me. I will find a way to get her to Mexico tonight. Shame on you for giving up on her. Shame on you, Dr. Robbins."

The man stormed out, leaving a shocked Helena and a teary eyed Arizona behind.

——

As Helena snacked on an apple, she heard her pager go off, checking to see it was a nine one one page from Arizona. Quickly running down the hallway, she found the woman at the door of a staff lounge.

"Dr. Robbins, what happened? Is Jessica ok?" The short girl asked, confused as to why she'd been paged.

"Yes, she's... she's fine. This is a different type of emergency. It's a ." The blond stage whispered, moving from the door to show Callie rambling in her mother tongue. "I don't speak Spanish, but you do. Help." She asked, clearly at a lost for what Callie was saying.

"D-do I translate?" The brunette asked, Arizona nodding as they watched Callie pace around. "Ok, s-she's saying her father is dragging her home as if she were a child, as if she can't make adult decisions about her life a-and whom to spend it with... Oh, wow, forget it, she's talking too fast." Helena whispered, her eyes widening. "I-I've got it."

Cautiously, Helena approached Callie, who still rambled. ""

Grabbing the woman's shoulder's, Helena spoke to her. "" ("Callie, enough Spanish. That way no one can understand you and Arizona can't help you. So, enough Spanish, ok?")

"My dad is taking me home. He's talking to the Chief and he's making me quit my job and quit my relationship, which he has yet to acknowledge even exist..." The older woman told her.

Sighing, Helena answered. "You have to tell him you can't, try to explain that you are happy to him."

"Lena, there isn't anything he hasn't done for me. Ok? ! He's paid for my college, he's paid for my med school, I have a huge trust fund because he doesn't want me to worry about anything about being a great doctor. I mean, the man has done nothing by support me his whole life!" Callie shrugged, clearly upset.

"Callie, supporting you and respecting or accepting you aren't the same thing. You need to tell him that. Try to make him understand you haven't changed, you're still his little girl, the same you've always been." Helena advised, giving her friend a soft smile.

——

As Helena walked by her patient's room, she saw Jessica was awake, walking into the room and giving her a smile.

"Oh, look who's up."

"Where's my daddy?" The young girl asked, her voice rasp.

"He should be here soon." Helena smiled and nodded at her reassuringly. "How are you feeling? Do you want some water?"

"I want my dad!" Jessica told her, teary eyed.

"It's ok, Jess." The doctor told her, holding her hand and running her thumb through it. "You know what I used to do when my little brother was scared, when he was around your age?" She asked, the child shaking her head. "I used to sing to him at night. What do you say I sing to you?"

At the girls soft nod, Helena laid with the girl, putting an arm around her back, and singing her the ever calming Portuguese lullabies. They stayed at this for almost an hour, the girl drifting back to sleep occasionally. Once her father entered the room, accompanied by Arizona, Helena gave him a soft smile.

"She's been asking for you." The resident informed, the girl's eyes fluttering open.

"Hi, baby." The man lowered himself down to talk to his daughter. "Guess what? We're gonna go to Mexico, and you're gonna love it there. The sky is so blue and the sand is white. And the water..."
