"My dad would love to meet you in person," a feminine voice snapped Adrian out of his daze. He smiled, and turned around with a straight face.
"Right behind you, Miss Anderson."
Her last name?! Zoey, it's nothing. Don't overthink it.
Ignoring the voices in her head, she summoned up courage to speak.
"Are you– I'm sorry, nevermind," a tear formed at the corner of her eyes. She was so emotional.
"Why do you care if I'm mad at you, or not?" Adrian asked, trying hard not to laugh.
"Do I look like I care?"
Of course, yes. Caring about the same man who was her prey? How tables turned around easily was, yet, a mystery.
"I knew you wouldn't admit it, Miss Anderson," he frowned.
Couldn't he stop addressing her formally?
After realizing she sounded like an ingrate earlier, she spoke up to cover up herself, "Let's go inside, please."
"I want you to smile."
"What?" she asked curiously, not knowing what he was up to.
"It's nothing. Just that your face could scare people away. Also, I don't want your dad thinking you had a fight with someone. I guess, you won't like to tell him what transpired. So, brighten up. Will you?" he asked politely.
She rolled her eyes in frustration. "Hey. Stop teasing me."
Did he look like he was joking around?
"I won't say it nicely again, Miss Anderson. Smile; it's an order." His tone was deep, and serious.
What audacity?
"Yes, sir." Her voice trembled with fear, then she forced a smile on her face.
He hated seeing her sad. Though her smile wasn't genuine this time, but it would do.
"Good. You may lead the way, Miss Anderson."
Things weren't going as she imagined. She expected they fixed up things, but things went all left.
Honestly, why did she care at the first place? She was in his life for a mission, but she forfeited it, all in the name of love. She wasn't sure that was the right word to describe it, yet.
Perhaps, he used a blindfold on her into making her fall for him by making such a huge sacrifice. Why didn't she see all of it coming? She was meant to be the reason for his downfall, but no. Her conscience would prick her.
Adrian found out every detail. Both her plan, and the hatcher; his ex girlfriend. Her every step was monitored right from the day she stepped her foot into the company. He had traced down every fucking detail about her.
He was going to sign those papers, only because they were fake. Everything was a setup, he planned most of it with his secretary. She was his spy. Although nosy, she was a trusted employee who served his dad; the former CEO, in years. Through her help, he got hold of the original papers.
Adrian could only blame it all on Kendall. She was fond of devising cheap plans, and always getting caught up with everything. As for Zoey, he would have to teach her a little lesson, despite his confession to her earlier.
Now, he could only wonder why Kendall wanted to claim his family company, illegally.
…
Sooner, Adrian, Zoey, and her dad were out of the hospital. Then his driver; Regan went ahead to drop them off at her place. It was Adrian's offer from the start.
"Thank you, son," Mr Anderson said, getting out of the car.
Adrian smiled, "It's my pleasure, sir."
"Please, come in. Atleast, let's offer you something to drink or eat," he insisted.
"No, thank you," Adrian declined politely. "I should be on my way."
Her dad kept on insisting. There was no possible way he could show his gratitude, other than that.
"It's okay, dad. He wouldn't listen," Zoey said, knowing fully well Adrian was very stubborn, and hard to convince. Besides, he disliked staying long in an unfamiliar environment and it was going to be weird, as they weren't in talking terms.
"If you say so," her dad shrugged.
"Take good care of your dad. Ensure he takes his medications as prescribed, and don't hesitate to inform me if any crisis arise." Her gaze met his, but he looked off.
"Yes, sir. Thank you for everything," she said.
"Stay safe, y'all. Goodnight," with that, Adrian whined up the window glass.
The engines coughed, and Regan drove away.
