Kendall's POV:
"Mac, you're fired!", I heard a chief-in-command scream in his deep voice. Mac lost his job this day because of me. I saw tears form at the corner of his eyes. I saw the pain of losing one's job.
He tried as much as possible to hold his tears back but it seemed almost impossible. I saw him walk out of the station, trying to get a hold of himself. I ruined his career. I was the one at fault. He wasn't even given the chance to defend himself.
I also couldn't help but watch my bestfriend slowly pass away in front of me. I... I was Kayla's murderer. I couldn't forgive myself for this. I didn't know what came over me that forced me into pulling the trigger at her.
How was I gonna face the law? How could I get myself out of this huge mess? No one was saying something. Why didn't they stop me? No, why couldn't I stop myself? I looked up to meet the frozen faces of the officers. They all stared at me as they gasped in surprise.
They beared witness to Kayla's murder. I'd lost someone so dear because of my actions. She made me realize the pain of losing someone you truly love. This was the worst way to say goodbye. I watched as the ambulance pulled over and carried her lifeless body away from my presence. The gun was taken out from my reach. They feared I could do worse.
The officers still didn't utter a single word. They shook their heads in utmost disappointment and found their way out. I was left alone. I could only think about my life, the damages I had cost in the lives people in the past but, it was too late. Maybe not, I thought. I was gonna face the consequences of my actions.
The first step was to get myself out of the station. But not a single person had come to request for my bail, not even my mom! I didn't know how I was gonna face her once I got the chance to leave. She could disown me or even kill me! I'd be dead if I dared cross her path.
I wouldn't forgive Mateo for this. He was the root of all my problems. If he didn't come into my life, I'd have been happily spending my life with Adrian. Then, Kayla ruined it all and now, she's gone. She got away with it.
Yes, this was it. I just figured out a way to get myself out of here. I quickly drew the attention of a female officer guarding my cell.
I called out to her in a calm tone. "Please, I wanna talk to you about something, ma'am", I pleaded.
"Hmm! I'm listening, speak up", she answered. She moved a little bit closer. I guessed she didn't want me using my voice to disturb the whole environment. It was fine that I got her attention.
"I request to have a word with my lawyer", I finally said. I saw the astonished look she wore on her face. There was definitely nothing surprising concerning what I had just said.
"Huh?", she asked me.
"Urg! do I have to repeat myself, ma'am?", I asked in return. Damn! I was being rude.
Nevertheless, she left and walked over to the desk of a higher officer. I saw her whisper some words in his ears, I wondered what she had told him. He nodded his head and picked up a telephone beside him. I was pretty sure it was my lawyer he was about trying to reach out to.
I sat back in my cell. I gave a wild stare at the ceiling, thinking about nothing in particular but my release now. I hoped he turned up.
This would be my only chance to leave here with no hope of ever returning. I found my eyes shutting slowly. I couldn't wait much longer. I fell into a deep sleep on the wait.
* * * * * * *
"Did you call me here to watch you sleep, miss?", I heard a familiar masculine voice ask. I jerked awake and lifted my eyes. The traces of sleep disappeared so sudden.
He was finally here. The officers still didn't open my cell, I had to talk through the iron bars.
"I'm sorry, Barrister Dawson", I apologized before I got on my feet.
"So, I'm here- What next?", he asked.
I moved closer to his ears and in a whisper, I said: "Please, I want you to get me out of here", I pleaded.
"You know it won't be that easy, but trust me on this", he assured me.
"I know you would never disappoint", I grinned.
"You just have to prepare the bill and keep it ready as soon as the court grants your bail. Guess you know the deal we are making here, am I right?", he asked with a smirk.
I nodded in response. "Money isn't the problem", I smiled.
"Consider it done", he said and finally, he took his leave. My mind was a little bit at rest. I just hoped things were gonna go as planned and I'd finally be out of this mess for good.
