Capítulo 91: Understanding

I nod as I say, "Then let me help you." He reaches out and traces my jaw again as he gently says, "As much as I enjoy hearing you say those words, there isn't much you can do to help. I'm in the final stages of completing my plan."

I tilt my head a little before nodding again and saying, "Okay, then you have to promise me something." He arches a dark brow as he lifts my chin. I softly say, "If something happens, don't hesitate to ask for help. You and Haun are no longer alone."

He leans down and lightly kisses me before saying, "I promise but that goes for you as well." I smile, leaning back to look at him before saying, "I need to speak to Vanir and give him an update on everything. I also want to try opening up another portal. The last one didn't work out so well..."

He frowns at me and asks, "What do you mean?" I step back, awkwardly rubbing the back of my neck as I say, "I don't know to be honest. I need to check a few things before knowing anything for sure. Also, I need to look for Aiya. I haven't seen or heard from her in a while and Vanir can't seem to sense her either."

Bolin clears his throat and says, "That's because she's dead." My eyes snap back over to him as I look at him in surprise. I blink a few times before asking, "You killed her?" He looks completely unbothered as he says, "She had it coming. I had planned to let you take care of her because she was your enemy but when I heard about what she had done and the things she was saying about you... I let my anger get the best of me."

I give him a dry look and he returns it while saying, "I'm not sorry. She deserved it." I struggle not to laugh as I sigh and shake my head saying, "Forget it. It all seems so... unimportant now. I guess I will have to collect payment through her family."

He nods before saying, "I have an appointment with the King. As much as I would like to remain here with you, I need to proceed with my plans." I wave him off with a smile as I say, "Don't worry about me. It seems like you and I both have a growing list of things we need to do."

He steps forward and quickly places a kiss on my forehead before saying, "I'll be back soon." He steps back and disappears into the shadows. I watch the shadows with keen interest, now realizing that they were actually people.

Tortured souls if you will...

I shake my thoughts and quickly walk out of the office; I head straight for the courtyard and wave my hand. The old portal opens up but no one's there. As I wait for Vanir to come, I ignore the falling snow and think about what I've learned recently.

It was a lot of information, but it also left a lot of unanswered questions. Putting aside the fact that Bolin is Royalty from another world and about to bring an entire race back... I try to figure out if the things that the woman told me were true.

No, like I said before... it doesn't matter.

"Lyra?"

My head snaps up when I hear Vanir's voice. I give him a warm smile as I ask, "Is everything okay on your end?" He gives me a large smile as he says, "Everything is progressing smoothly. Have you found out about Aiya and the group that followed her?" We were speaking in code so the others wouldn't know that he was investigating them.

I nod my head a little before shrugging and saying, "Yes and no. Aiya is dead, but I don't know the whereabouts of the group that followed her. They haven't approached me yet." Vanir nods his head solemnly.

Unspoken words hang from the tip of my tongue as the old woman's words replay in my head, but my mouth seems glued shut. Vanir sighs and says, "I thought that may have been the case. That world seems like a dangerous place child, please be careful."

I give him a small smile as I say, "It's okay, I have the most dangerous one by my side. When you're friends with the monsters, you have no enemies." He blinks in surprise before breaking out in laughter.

My smile grows watching him. "I'm going to try and open up another portal and create a new bridge. I don't know if it'll work but it's worth a try." I say watching him with eyes filled with warmth. He sobers up as he says, "You can only have one bridge in place at a time."

I slowly nod my head as I say, "Right, but I want to still try. If I fail to do it... I will collapse this bridge so that I can make a new one." He deflates a little as he says, "You speak as if it's an easy thing to do."

I smirk as I say, "For me, it is." He rolls his eyes and says, "I was clearly worried about you for no reason! Fine! I will stand by on this side and wait to hear back from you. If I still haven't heard from you in a week, we will start rebuilding the bridge on our end."

I nod in agreement while saying, "That sounds like a good idea." Vanir nods in agreement, turning to leave when I say, "One more thing..."

He turns, lifting his white eyebrows in question. I hesitate before asking the very thing I said I didn't need to know. "Was I adopted?" Vanir blinks in surprise, looking at me in shock and confusion but he doesn't deny it.

I wait, staring at him through the portal. I see his blue eyes trying to work things out as he struggles to find the right words but all he manages to do is ask, "Why are you asking that now?" Even though my face remains calm, my heart beats wildly.

He steps closer as he asks more urgently, "Did something happen? Did you meet someone strange? Did someone come and find you?" I give him a strained smile as I say, "Don't worry, nothing happened. I will see you in a week or less."

He panics, "Wait! Lyra, listen to me!" I wave my hand, closing the portal and cutting him off. I remain silent as I close my eyes. I take a deep breath as the snow continues to fall all around me but this time it was building up.

It was cold... extremely cold.
