Once I see her cresting the horizon, I pull out my map to get my bearings on the distance to Helgen and the route I plan to take to get there.
After confirming everything I take a quick lunch before using both hands to cast the longstride spell, zooming along the forest paths, making excellent time while not using too much stamina. Though it's still slower than traveling in my wolf form.
And after about half an hour I have to stop to catch my breath and allow my stamina and magika to regenerate.
I rest by a small stream, enjoying the cool waters and resting in the shade of a large tree.
After about another half hour I continue on my journey, getting back to the splintered gates of Helgen, with the sun still high in the sky.
I push open the gate to see some sort of trip wire warning system triggered alerting a large Nordic man in hide bandit armor to my presence, causing him to rush over to me with a great war hammer.
"Stop right there! Don't even think about moving! You see my friends coming? They won't hesitate to kill you if you so much as breathe funny." The man threatens as three more 'bandits' emerge from the city's rubble.
"Now, who are you and what is the meaning of this incursion? Quickly now, speak!" The man orders with the authoritative tone of a drill sergeant.
"At ease soldier, I'm here to discuss an urgent matter with Valerius." I say with a straight back and equally authoritative tone as I hold my hands behind my back without showing an ounce of fear.
"Never heard of him." The man says with a shrug, "You must be mistaken, there's nobody by that name here. Now, be on your way! We don't want to hurt you!" The man threatens again readying his war hammer.
"It's an urgent message from our mutual friend, Marcus Jannus. You will take me to him." I say resolutely, refusing to budge.
"Don't know him either. I'm beginning to run out of patience with you! Leave now!" The man blusters once more, starting to lose his intimidating aura when faced with my indifference.
"Cut the act, the Keepers of Hattu are no mere bandits." I say plainly, causing the man's eyes to widen in shock before he firmly grips his weapons and regains control of his face.
"I don't know who you are stranger, or what you want… But I advise you to choose your words very carefully from here on out." The man says pointedly.
"Allow me to introduce myself. Commander Silvantus Malborne of the Dragon's Maw Mercenary Company, and I come bearing gifts. Marcus offers Valerius his wife's wedding ring." I say with a smirk before brandishing the ring.
"Let me see that…" The man says while leaning in to examine the ring more closely.
"Hmm, did you say Marcus Jannus? From the war, Marcus Jannus? Why didn't you say so?" The man says, finally lowering his hammer in relief, though from the distance I can see one of his soldiers, a woman rolling her eyes in exasperation.
"I did… And I have a letter from him for Valerius. And before you ask, I'll only deliver it to him personally." I tell him while putting away the ring.
"Very well, I will take you inside. But all of us have our eyes on you, and if you try and start trouble it will be the last trouble that you ever start." The man threatens one last time before leading me to the keep.
"There you go, now you sound like a real bandit." I compliment causing one of the 'bandits' to struggle to hold back a chuckle.
We walk on into the keep where an Imperial man in heavy plate armor emerges from the shadows questioning the Nord, "Balfring, what do you think you're doing?! Who is this person and why have you brought him here?"
"He has an urgent message for you from Marcus Jannus. He was alone and I thought you would want to talk to him." Balfring replies with a shrug.
"What? Marcus Jannus? Balfring, have you gone completely mad?! That's impossible!" Valerius shouts in disbelief.
"I thought the same thing sir, but it's true! He showed me a letter to you with Marcus' seal. It's real alright." Balfring reassures Valerius before saying, "And sir, somehow Marcus has found Sabrina's wedding ring and sent it to you."
Upon hearing that Valerius' face goes slightly pale as he gives me a quick sideways glance before turning back to Balfring, "Balfring, you are dismissed. All of you may resume your patrols."
"Yessir!" Balfring says with a chest salute before leading his group back outside the keep.
Once they are gone, Valerius addresses me with a wary look, "I don't know who you are or why you're here, so you better have some good answers to my questions. May I see that ring?" He asks extending his armored hand.
"Of course, it is yours after all." I say handing over the wedding band as well as the sealed note.
"You say you were sent by Marcus Jannus? Where is he now?" Valerius asks after studying the ring for a long time, before pulling out a string and tying it around his neck as a necklace.
"He îs currently in Falkreath, waiting my return with your reply." I tell him.
"And do you know how he came into possession of this ring?" Valerius asks intently.
"He must have found it in the Imperial City while you were imprisoned." I say, telling him my best guess.
"Yes, yes, I suppose that may have been possible. But, I… This is all so overwhelming." Valerius says before taking a seat in a nearby chair to process all that he's just learned.
"I know it isn't worth much, but I'm sorry for the loss of your family. The Thalmor took someone I loved from me as well." I say, sympathizing with his loss.
