"Prince Arthur is still asleep." Myria answers with a sad smile, the servant has been in the service of Prince Doran since he was a baby.
Doran tries not to show his disappointment, he lets the servant dress him and walks to his grandfather's room.
There he finds her grandmother sitting in the chair next to the sleeping prince.
"Morning grandmama."
The princess smiles weakly at him and lifts him onto her lap, hugging him tightly as if he were a stuffed animal.
They both look at Arthur.
"He looks better," he observes optimistically.
"Yes," she replies absently.
Dorna Martell's mind is in a place far away, remembering the events of the last few weeks.
The day after their discussion, Dorna woke up only to find that her husband was nowhere to be found. After sending some servants to investigate, one of her husband's servants informed them that the prince had decided to retire to the Water Gardens for a few days.
Dorna didn't think much about it, her husband never lied to her or went behind her back: she had no reason to doubt his servant's words.
That day she was thinking about how to deal with House Swann.
It was her grandson who gave her an idea.
***Flashback***
Dorna is sitting on a balcony with her grandson in her arms, both are silent looking at the sea.
"Look grandmama! That's a Swan ship!" He excitedly points to a ship in the distance.
Dorna sees the ship and makes a face.
The characteristic ship of the Summer Islands has nothing to do with House Swann but its name reminds her of the issue that she has not yet decided how to tackle.
"Doran, if someone bothers you how do you get rid of them?" She asks her grandson without expecting a serious answer.
"Eh?" he looks at her confused "If a friend is very annoying but you want to spend time alone?"
"Something like that." She smiles softly at him, she inwardly scoffs at the word friend, as if she were ever going to strike up a friendship with those barbarians who dared to attack them.
"A few weeks ago when Uncle Steffon, Uncle Andrey and their families came to visit, Theo wouldn't stop following me around. He didn't leave me alone for a moment and I wanted to practice my reading to read my brother stories."
"And what did you do?"
"I told Trevor that Theo wanted to hear about him traveling to Essos with his father but that he was too shy to ask."
Dorna laughs lightly. She remembers how spirited Trevor is, she has no doubt that in the end Theoden was too busy escaping from his cousin to have time to bother her grandson.
"But didn't Theoden tell Trevor that he wasn't interested in his stories?"
"He tried," Doran shrugs, "But since I told Trevor that Theo is very shy and prone to denial…" The mischievous smile on her grandson's face reminds her of her own smile.
Suddenly Dorna gets up and leaves her grandson quickly on the chair.
"Sorry Doran, I just remembered I have some letters to write."
Arriving at her solar, she takes some books detailing the current political situation in the Stormlands, written by her spies.
"Dondarrion, Selmy, Caron, Morrigen."
A dangerous smile appears on her face as she picks up a scroll and begins to write. Her grandson just gave her the idea of how to take down House Swann.
`House Wyl will crush them in the Marches and I will make sure to destroy them completely`
House Swann is history, when Dorna is done with them there will be nothing left.
*** End Flashback ***
`You have to wake up Arthur,` thinks the princess. `You still have a lot to do, Lewyn barely has nine namedays, you promised him you would take him fishing on his tenth nameday. Doran and Mors are so young they won't even remember you in a decade if you die now.`
***
At noon Arthur Uller opened his eyes.
He looked around in confusion and saw his wife, his grandson and his daughter.
His grandson climbed on his bed and started asking him questions.
"Can you see and hear me?", "Do you remember what happened?",...
While his grandson asked him dozens of questions, barely giving him time to answer, his daughter called the maester.
Arthur remembers the battle, he remembers his family and who he is. His speech doesn't sound garbled and he understands every word. His mental faculties do not seem altered. But his family's joy is soon dimmed when Arthur tries to get up.
"Why can't I move my legs?!"
***
No matter what Maester Wulfric or Maester Caleotte tried, the prince's legs did not regain their mobility.
The maesters think it's because of the bone damage but Doran knows better. He saw many similar cases during his time as Harry Potter. The nerves in his legs were disconnected from the nervous system.
Nerve damage is a very serious thing, there are few spells and potions that can repair it.
Doran couldn't do anything to restore mobility to his grandfather, the necessary spells are too advanced, he wouldn't be able to perform them until his teens. And as for the potions, he is missing too many ingredients.
In the end Arthur had to get used to his new lifestyle. It wasn't easy, the prince's seriousness was replaced by a rude and contemptuous attitude. He had many fits of anger and could hardly look his family in the face.
Doran proposed to make a chair with wheels so that at least the prince could move with some freedom. His idea was well received and with the help of the maesters and an experienced carpenter they made a wheelchair.
The wheelchair is not a new invention in this world, learned Doran, models already existed in ancient times but Doran made some tweaks to improve the designs.
The wheelchair lifted the prince's spirits a bit, but not much since House Martell's residence is in a tower with too many stairs.
So Doran came up with the idea to add elevators to the Tower of the Sun. Again elevators are not new to westeros, some castles like Casterly Rock already have them. The princess supported the project and soon the planning began. Doran did not want to be left out so he insisted on helping, Obella supported her son noticing how ingenious he is and thinking that the experience of seeing all the planning will be enriching. She herself participated in the project.
Doran made small contributions to the project, nothing too big but enough to impress others.
By now there is no doubt in anyone's mind at House Martell that Doran is a genius. His lessons increased in difficulty accordingly and he received much more attention. His grandmother began to teach him politics and how to run a kingdom.
While the construction was taking place, Arthur and the family moved to the Water Garden since the palace allows the prince to move freely.
There Doran became very fond of his great great grandmother Daenerys, who entertained him with many stories. He learned about the Blackfyre rebellions from someone who lived through all four of them, someone who according to many was one of the reasons for such rebellions.
Daenerys spoke fondly of Daemon Blackfyre, Doran came to admire the brave and honorable warrior and greatly questioned the history he had already learned.
Daemon Blackfyre is remembered as a bastard, a greedy traitor envious of the birthright of his half brother, a man without honor.
But Daemon died because he refused to dishonor the corpse of his fallen enemy and because he refused to abandon his dying child.
Doran promises to investigate further into the motives for the first rebellion.
He also spent a lot of time with the Jacaerys`s family, who live in Water Gardens.
