Chapter 40: Noticing the Danger
'I must look for my sword, the others will arrive soon.' William thought, still holding the Beyonder's head. 'But that last attack was surprising, I was lucky that he seemed to be weakened. Probably that ability of his pathway allows him to copy certain powers higher than his sequence, but with restrictions on power.'
He found his sword in the same spot he had thrown it when he started using Debris.
"Hmm, I wonder if this head will be useful for some kind of research. I got the equivalent of a Sequence 6 formula anyway, this should give me the option to promote to Sequence 7." He mused aloud as he walked over to the corpse and finally dropped his head in front of the newly arrived Nighthawks.
Leonard, Kenley, and Dunn himself stared dead-eyed at William's haggard but cheerful appearance.
"What the hell happened to you?" Kenley questioned.
"That guy over there was an envoy of the Theosophy Order, a Sequence 6 Beyonder by his own words." As he spoke he took off his trench coat, which was completely torn. "He threw a bolt of lightning from the sky at me, that's what caused the building back there to collapse. Speaking of which, they'll find us quickly if we don't leave."
Dunn figured that out by now and was collecting the body to take to Blackthorn Security Company.
"You say this guy was a Sequence 6 Beyonder?" Kenley continued the conversation as they scurried through the alleys. "I had noticed that you were strong, but I didn't think you were at this level already."
William looked a bit embarrassed.
"I was lucky that he let his guard down. My pathway grants me physical abilities far superior to a normal human, so I was able to resist the lightning." I explained. Although he probably wouldn't have been able to win without Debris, being able to withstand the Beyonder's final attack was thanks to the Knight pathway allowing him not only the base stamina superior to that of ordinary humans but also the ability to strengthen his body quickly. The training he was doing during his spare time was proving very useful.
Dunn was in an oddly good mood and decided to joke around a bit.
"Yet you always come out of your fights with new scars. You make me worry a little." He remarked.
Leonard chuckled.
"Is it perhaps because the ladies like this kind of thing?" he scoffed.
William smiled wryly.
"I stopped thinking about those things a long time ago, specifically after the prettiest woman I've ever met was apparently a man and tried to turn me into a doughnut."
Leonard and Kenley almost died laughing at that comment, Dunn just went back to his poker face.
"Oh right, I feel like I've reached the highest point I can reach as Sequence 8, so I'll try to promote to Sequence 7."
This time they all looked at him in bewilderment.
"Wait, already?" Leonard blinked in confusion.
"Seriously?" Even Dunn questioned William.
He just nodded.
"I actually digested the potion a few days ago, but I wanted to build a solid foundation and get used to my powers well before the promotion." He first looked serious, but then he smiled. "However, these guys seem to be specifically targeting me, I need to protect myself, and as I've said before, I think this is as far as I can go at the moment."
Dunn nodded, at this point, he understood William's true potential.
"So you're going to try to get into the Red Gloves?" He asked, though he already knew the answer.
"That's correct. However, I plan to stay in Tingen a bit longer, at least until all these events that are appearing recently stop." His words seemed to light a light bulb in the heads of the other three Nighthawks.
'Wait, it's true that too many events are taking place recently. Is it a coincidence?' The Captain of the Tingen Nighthawks narrowed his eyes. 'I hadn't even realized until William mentioned it, something isn't right.'
The other two were having the same thoughts, and a bad feeling began to settle in their minds.
"From your reactions, I guess all of you hadn't noticed." He had mentioned it so casually in order to correctly assess how bad the situation was. 'If even the Captain has been affected by whatever is going on, then we have a problem.'
They had finally reached Blackthorn Security Company and went to deposit the body in the basement. Just before they took the property from the Beyonder and prepared to take it to Saint Samuel Cathedral, in Backlund, which was where a good part of the Church's resources were stored.
"Captain, you understand what's going on, right?" William asked him.
Dunn seemed wary.
"If it's what I think it is, we should call a Deacon or even an Archbishop." He pursed his lips. "It's not something we can handle."
'Just as I thought.' William's hands clenched into fists.
He had wanted to learn as much of the Church's past as possible before intending to get involved. One of the pieces of information he got was that of a betrayal by one of the Thirteen Archbishops.
Ince Zangwill had escaped with a Sealed Artifact, a hazardous one.
