"Anansi Paragon…fuck a duck!" I groaned.
"Fuck a duck! That's all you can say! I thought you killed him!" Jane hissed into my ear. However she whispered a little too loud so Bo and Indy both overheard her.
"You killed him?!" Bo exclaimed in much louder than necessary voice. Damon and Alberto both covered Bo's mouth in the next instant while shushing him. I broke my staring contest with Anansi to glare at Bo.
"Quiet you idiot!" Damon and Alberto snapped. Indy slapped Bo on the back of the head and snapped something at him in Arabic.
"Chase, what the fuck is Bo talking about?!" Louie growled at me, switching to English from Universal standard. I looked at Louie and held a finger up to my lips.
"Careful what you say! There are a lot of Americans and people from English speaking countries." I said switching to English like Louie. Louie looked around and saw several groups that were close enough to hear us if they really wanted to. He looked back to me and nodded.
"Umm…my love I think I figured out what we were forgetting about our daughter's relationship with Anansi." Viola whispered for her husband.
"You're right…though that doesn't explain why that man is standing right next to the divine emperor of Niger." Turak'Kahn replied.
"Well you can ask him in a second. He's coming over." Indy said, pointing over to The Emperor of Niger's entourage.
I frowned as I saw the group make their way over to us. Something seemed off though, all the guards seemed to be centered around Anansi instead of the emperor. What's more the gaze of the crowd and everyone in my group seemed to be centered on Anansi as well.
<BOSS! That dead guy is back!> Bone-lasher growled through our mental connection. I glanced over to where he, Empress, Colossus and Grandpa Seamus were and saw all four of them shooting daggers at Anansi.
<I know Bone. Already got advanced warning.> I replied then added. <Remember, Grandpa's safety is priority number one.>
<Understood….> Bone-lasher growled menacingly.
"Um…Chase…what's the plan here?" Jane asked in a hushed tone as the Emperor and Anansi approached.
"Stay cool." I replied quickly.
The Divine emperor's congregation came to a stop a few feet away in front of Turak'Kahn and Viola. A member of his retinue stepped in front of the emperor and cleared his throat.
"Presenting his Divine Emissary of the universal creator God Nana Buluku: The Divine Emperor of Niger Azakra!" The man announced loudly. Anansi held his arms out, palms up and at his waist making a grand sweeping gesture to everyone while looking down his nose at them.
"You may approach." He said with a hint of a chuckle in his voice. I cocked a brow at Anansi and almost said something when Turak'Kahn stepped forward and tilted his head slightly at Anansi.
"Your Divinity." Turak'Kahn said curtly to Anansi. Anansi tilted his head slightly in response before replying.
"Your Highness." Anansi replied.
'Why the fuck is he addressing Anansi?' I thought then Viola and Jane both stepped beside the Pharaoh and addressed Anansi.
"Your Divinity…" They both said.
I frowned at all three of them then over Anansi and the Emperor. I then noticed something strange. While at first glance it seemed that the Emperor was standing beside Anansi now that I was looking closer I realized that he was a step behind Anansi. As if the Emperor was a subordinate of Anansi instead of his superior.
"Chase…" Damon whispered and subtly poked my back. I snapped out of my contemplative stupor and saw that Anansi was looking at me expectantly. "…say something."
I looked back at Anansi then over at Emperor Azakra and channeled mana into my void pocket enchanted rings and pulled a scepter out of the pocket. Clasping it in both hands I held it out to the Emperor as an offering then said.
"You're Divinity. I've already reached my asshole quota for today so I'm trying a new approach, being nice and respectful. Please accept this scepter as a token of respect." I said, leaving everyone in my group as well as any onlookers dumbfounded.
The Emperor looked surprised at my gesture, looking between the outstretched scepter and me. His expression turning unreadable as murmurs started around us. Jane suddenly reached up and grabbed my ear, yanking it back towards her as she hissed.
"Chase what the hell are you doing?! That's Anansi Paragon! Not Divine emperor Azakra!" Jane hissed. I winced and resisted yelling ow, instead answering.
"What are you talking about? You guys are talking to Anansi, that's the Emperor!" I griped. Jane yanked harder on my ear earning a yip from me and frowned.
"What are you talking about?" Jane hissed. Her objection was suddenly drowned out by the loud and hearty laughter of the Emperor. Everyone looked to the Emperor and saw a bright blue smoke puff of smoke billow off of him as well as a red puff of smoke billow off of Anansi.
"Most impressive! To think you'd be able to see through the utility spell casted by Anansi, you certainly are deserving of the royal moniker: Revolutionary Paragon." The Divine Emperor Azakra exclaimed.
"DIVINE EMPEROR AZAKRA!" Everyone in the vicinity exclaimed. The Divine Emperor laughed even louder at everyone's exasperation.
"What's going on here?!" Jane exclaimed then looked at me.
"The Emperor just told you. He and Anansi were under the effects of utility spells that swapped appearances, so can you let go of my ear!" I snapped and tried to yank my ear away. To my surprise she let go easily.
"Lil pampered princess." I growled under my breath. Jane didn't hear me thankfully so I turned my attention back to the Emperor and held out the scepter again. "I was serious about the scepter. It's a enchanted item I created. The spell enchanted on it is called Domain. It creates a field around the caster that allows the caster to place simple rules that anyone or thing inside the domain has to follow."
The Emperor arched a brow at that explanation then stepped forward and took the scepter from my hand. Lifting it up towards the sun, he looked it over with a discerning eye then lowered it and held it out to his side. One of the guards near the Emperor quickly rushed to his side and took the scepter from his ruler.
"I accept this gift." Emperor Azakra said. I noticed his eyes glancing occasionally at my farm crystal as he spoke. I also noticed that Anansi had barely spared a glance in my direction since approaching. "I've watched your exploits these last few days. You are indeed a powerful splicer. One on par with my country's own Paragon."
On that verbal cue Anansi looked to me with an glance that seemed causal at first. However I recognized a faint dark glint in his eyes, the same one that I had seen when I fought and killed him in Tolapo village.
"Anansi Paragon, Paragon of combat magic for the Divine Empire of Niger." Anansi said in universal standard then switched to Torapos. "A pleasure to meet you, Star farm crystal bearer: Sho'lajah."
I tensed slightly when I heard Anansi speak in Torapos and use the name given to me by the village. I wasn't the only one, Jane, Alberto, and Damon all tensed as well.
"You know my given name?" I asked, switching to Torapos as well. Anansi quirked a eyebrow at me
"The name Sho'lajah is not a common one and so obviously Torapos. However it is rude to talk in another language around those that cannot speak it." Anansi said then glanced at those around us before bowing slightly at his Emperor and switched back to Universal standard. "My Divinity, I must have some words with the young hopeful. I beg your forgiveness and my leave from your side."
The Emperor nodded and waved Anansi off with a casual flick of his hand.
"Yes, yes, go have your conversation. I have things to discuss here with The Pharaoh." Emperor Azakra said then looked at Turak'Kahn seriously. I started to look concerned but the sound of Anansi clearing his throat snatched my attention.
"Follow me Sho'lajah…" Anansi said and turned to walk towards a mostly empty section of the observation deck.
I started to follow him but was stopped silently by Jane grabbing my hand tightly. I paused and looked back, seeing the concern and fear in her eyes. I smiled softly and as reassuringly as I could. Jane eyes softened and she let go of my hand, promising extreme violence if anything happened to me. I turned and followed Anansi towards the mostly deserted part of the observation deck.
<Fours, Jiggles, Bone-lasher, Empress, maximum vigilance. No harm comes to anyone with us. Understand?> I ordered through my mental connection.
<Understood!> All four of my evos responded.
As Anansi and I approached the edge of the deserted space I paid one attention to every detail about him while trying to remember what I could about the man from the Tolapo village. Nothing seemed off about the man to suggest he was another illusion, that fact made me even more uncertain about the man.
"You seem guarded Sho'lajah. Have I done something to offend you?" Anansi asked in Torapos once we were a certain distance away from anyone that could hear our exchange.
"You're fucking with me, right?" I balked, replying in Torapos. The Paragon stopped and turned to face me. I stopped and saw the genuine confusion on his face.
"I can assure you I am not…though I am now assuming this has to do with my recent failed attempt to destroy Tolapo village." Anansi said. I narrowed my eyes at him and flexed my fingers.
"Failed attempt is putting if mildly. You corrupted two villagers, caused the deaths of many more, nearly killed my great aunt, and last time I checked I killed you and had what remained of your brutalized corpse I cremated!" I barked. Anansi quirked a eyebrow at my outburst then nodded slowly.
"I see…no wonder AC-4 hasn't checked in. Already assumed that he was dead but it's nice to get confirmation." Anansi said casually.
"What?!" I griped. Anansi tilted his head up and tapped his index finger against his chin.
"Hmmm….how to explain…" Anansi said softly before smirking and leveling me with a sinister look. "…the Anansi Paragon you killed was little more than one of my body doubles."
