"You guys sure you got all of them? All of the Thrads?" I asked Sin and Iris as they dusted themselves off. Iris frowned and pointed to the warehouse, which was now fully ablaze and on the verge of crumbling.
"The warehouse is on fire, and all the thrads inside were in cages. We attacked so fast that none of the fire dragons had any chance to release any." She said. I sighed in relief and then looked to my evos.
Jiggles and Bone-lasher had stood up already and were shaking all the sand off themselves. Empress flew down and landed on Bone-lasher's back and eyed me, while Alpa'nagia hovered around me and made sure I was okay.
"You guys did a good job then. Head back home and rest. We'll need you soon." I said, holding my farm crystal up.
"As you wish Star Shaper." Alpa'nagia replied, then returned.
"I will be awaiting you call my lord." Empress said with a bow, then returned to my crystal as well.
"Nothing but a bunch of weaklings." Bone-lasher grumbled then returned.
"Boss Bone is right. It's too weak to be a real challenge." Jiggles said on his return.
"Pogs, you go back too." Sin said. Pogs nodded and returned to Sin's crystal without a comment. Sin sighed and looked around the frowned. "Wait…where's the brat and your Millitanto?"
"STAR BOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSS!" Grimm-Guard bellowed. I looked up and saw the massive evo flying a full speed towards us.
"THE FUCK IS THAT THING!?" Haws and Louie screamed.
"Grimm-Guard…" I sighed then held up my hands. "Grimm-Guard slow down! I'm fine!"
Grimm-Guard landed in the sand a few feet away from the nearest transport and coiled around the area. He wrapped himself in a circle five times before his body falling landed, trapping all of us in a area about the size of a basketball court. Grimm-Guard's head climbed over his coiled body to look at me, I swore I could see tears in his compound eyes.
"Thank goodness you're okay!" He chittered.
"Yeah I'm fine you big worry wort." I said then reached up to pat him on the head. He leaned in and chittered softly against my touch. "But where is Bo?"
"Clinging on for dear life!" Bo's voice shouted from somewhere inside Grimm-Guard's coil. I turned and looked in the direction it came from and saw the young boy trying hos best to climb over a section of Grimm-Guard's body. "Grimm-Guard took off the second he saw the explosion and forgot I was on his head!"
"GRIMM!" I snapped. Grimm-Guard lowered his head and chittered sadly.
"Sorry Star Boss…." He said sorrowfully.
Bo finally had enough time struggling and cast an axiom spell sigil. Using the tricky movement Enchanted ring I gave him he shot flames from hls feet and launched himself over Grimm-Guard's back and into the area that he'd cordoned the rest of us in. His landing wasn't as great as his take off and he ended up tumbling several feet.
"OW!" He groaned then stood up and fisted himself off. He eyed Haws, Louie and Karen who was hiding behind her driver and pointed at them. "Who are these guys?"
"Oh…yeah introductions. Sin, Iris, and Bo, this is my Hawthorn Frederickson but everyone calls him Haws and this is Louie Gents. My parents used to work with them in St. Louis." I said then motioned to both of them. "Haws, Louie, this is Iris Stone, Audin Akkesin but we call him Sin, and Bo Kestrel. Iris is my classmate and Sin and Bo's parents are my employees."
"Employees? I feel like I'm missing something…" Haws said scratching his head.
"I'll explain more in detail later…right now I need your expertise Sin." I said then looked over at Karen with a cold look. "That woman over there kidnapped Louie's son, I want to know where he is."
"Did she now?" Sin said narrowing his eyes at her and cracked his knuckles. Karen paled from behind her driver.
"Wait! You harm me and you'll never see the little splicer brat alive again!" Jaren exclaimed.
"As it stands now I'll never see my son anyway!" Louie exclaimed. Karen's eyes widened as Sin slowly approached her.
"Sounds like daddy dearest wants to find out where his son is." Sin said then drew his mana-lock and fired it. A electric bullet struck the driver and lightning zapped him and then jumped from the driver to Karen and knocked her back into the sand.
Sin walked over and picked up Karen's limp body and threw her over his shoulder then looked to me.
"Where you want to take her boss?" Sin asked.
"There are plenty of vacant buildings in Bronze City, find one and get all you can out of her." I instructed.
"Roger that boss." Sin said then walked over to Twilight. Twilight lowered his head and Sin quickly jumped on top. "I'll head back to the shop when I'm done. You might need to heal her Chase."
"Gotcha." I said absentmindedly then looked to Louie and Haws. "While he finds out where KC is we can all head back to the shop and you can fill all of us in on what exactly Justice technologies planned to do in Andromeda City, Louie."
"Okay…but how exactly are we going to this…shop?" Louie asked.
"Hope you're not afraid of heights." Bo teased.
"Bo stop being a brat!" Sin exclaimed as Twilight flapped his wings and took off towards the bronze city.
"Let's just get going. I want to get out of here before that warehouse explodes again.!" Iris said climbing up on Grimm-Guard's head.
"That's a good idea." I said
***
"HOW CAN SOMETHING SO BIG FLY!" Haws bellowed as he clung to Grimm-Guard's back like a terrified cat.
"His exoskeleton is durable but surprisingly light." I replied from my spot on Grimm-Guard's head.
Bo was seated next me looking down at the bronze city as we made our way back to the shop. Iris sat slightly behind us with her arms off. Louie sat comfortably beside Haws looking at one of Grimm-Guard's wings flapping so fast it was nearly invisible.
"So Louie, what exactly is going on?" I asked. Louie looked towards me and clenched his fists.
"It's a long story Chase, so bare with me for a minute." Louie said. "Shortly before you left Angie was attacked in our quarters. I found her knocked out with KC nowhere to be found. We looked everywhere and all we found was a note from Karen's men."
"Why kidnap your kid though?" Bo asked.
"KC is a splicer, even if we went to the police in America about the kidnapping they wouldn't care. Not that we could go to the police. The note she left said that if she did she'd kill him." Louie said softly.
"Makes sense, police are useless regardless of the country." Bo huffed. Sin and I both nodded in agreement.
"Why was she so focused on getting you specifically?" Iris asked.
"Because I specialize in genetic variance resequencing. It was needed for a project that she was heading up. She offered me a position but I didn't want to up and move my whole family so I declined." Louie said.
"Is that a rare skill or something in techno-splicing?" Iris asked.
"It is. In order to learn it, you need to spend multiple years in college to learn about it…unless you're Chase, then you pick it up while casually watching people do it during the course of a summer. Invalidating a man's years of hard work and study." Louie said, glaring at me.
"I can totally understand your pain." Iris said with a nod of understanding.
"I'm not apologizing for being smart." I said, crossing my arms, then looked off into the distance. "But I'm guessing those odd looking thrads are your doing?"
"Yeah…" Louie said.
"Now that you think about if those thrads did look odd." Iris said, tapping her chin. "What exactly is your job? This genetic variance resequencing?"
"To put it simply in break apart complete gene sequences and rearrange them to alter a evo embryo." Louie explained.
"Its principles are the basis for the body modification I use on evos. Break apart their genes and then change the sequences around." I said, then frowned as a thought suddenly occurred to me. "Those thrads…you used the ascended as the basis for them, didn't you Louie?"
"Yes…thanks to all the blood samples you helped us collect of the ascended thrad while we still had it at Justice technologies." Louie said, lowering his head. Haws and I both gasped, and I jumped to my feet. I was nearly blown over by a gust of wind and had to quickly sit back down.
"Why the hell would you use an evos DNA in the creation of a new evo?!" Haws Snapped.
"That'll cause cellular degeneration! They'll start to lose the ability to be controlled and then lose their minds all together!" I added.
"WAIT, WHAT?!" Iris bellowed, then turned to look at Louie. "Why the hell would you do that?!"
"I was ordered to do that….by that woman and her superiors. When I tried to explain what would happen, they told me to do it anyway. She knew full well those thrads she was selling to those gangsters would go on a rampage." Louie said.
"Why would she give them the thrads then?" Bo asked.
"To drum up business…" I said through gritted teeth, then looked at everyone. "…they were going to flood the streets with evos that can't be controlled by mana and will go on a rampage. If enough of them get into the gold city and cause a panic, then the local government will need counter attack. This could lead to losses and a need to buy evos to recover from those losses."
"Wait, are you serious!" Iris exclaimed.
"That was actually her plan." Louie said. "Techno-splicing companies make their money buy selling evos during wars and small skirmishes. So, in order to keep making money, there needs to be a steady supply of conflict."
"So instead of waiting for conflicts to happen naturally, they're causing their own. They simply use our embarrassing Simon Caldifax as justification for bringing all those evos into the city." I said. Louis nodded. Haws frowned and poked Louie in the chest.
"What the hell, Louie! Why the hell didn't you tell me any of this! After everything we've been through!" Haws snapped.
"She had KC Haws…I didn't want to do anything that would put him in jeopardy…still I couldn't just do nothing and let another slaughter like what happened in St. Louis." Louie said, then glanced down at his hands.
Haws flash of anger died down as quickly as it had flared up. A look of guilt replaced the one frown before. He sighed and placed his hand in Louie's shoulder.
"Sorry, we'll get your son back, Louie." Haws said.
"Yeah, we will…" I affirmed.
"We're almost at the shop, and it looks like mom and dad are back too!" Bo exclaimed, pointing off in the distance. I looked where Bo was pointing and saw the shop. Midnight was laying down in the lot beside the shop, and Gargesh and the two other Orkands Bo created were carrying lumber and materials inside the shop.
"The heck kind of evos are those?" Louie asked.
"The green evos are an Orkand. It's an evo that Bo is here made. The large reptile is called a void drake. It's one that I made." I said.
"Wait, the kid made an evo?" Haws asked, pointing to Bo.
"Wait, Chase made an evo?" Louie exclaimed.
"That's debatable…" Iris muttered. I frowned at Iris and crossed my arms.
"Shuddup Tri-clops!" I snapped.
"Bite me, Star Child!" Iris snapped back.
Evo Fact: The Crawnuff faced the possibility of going redundant after an ecological disaster made one of its bases end up on the endangered list. Since the animal is not native to the United States, mass production of the Crawnuff went to a standstill as techno-splicing companies could no longer import blood samples for their creation.
