Rex watched as Victoria dove into Orlando's Mustang. Orlando partly backed up and cut his wheels sharply before flying down the road. The second his red tails vanished down the dark street, Rex's advisors couldn't help but laugh at how that played out.
"Was Orlando phase six?" his shirtless advisor teased.
Rex couldn't stop his grin as he admitted. "No, Orlando wasn't involved with any of my phases."
Now even Rex couldn't control his chuckle. They knew Rex had full intentions of capturing Victoria tonight. And Samantha's jealousy went according to plan for Rex. The fact that Orlando swooped in and saved her was completely unexpected.
In the middle of their laughter, a darker shadow formed into a solid figure. Kai's red eyes were fumed to see Rex and his advisors as their laughter turned into a smirking grin.
"What did you do with my wife!" Kai roared, extracting his fangs in uncontrollable anger.
Rome, Glenn, Ivan, and a few other vampires in Kai's clan landed aside from him with space between their stances.
"I've done nothing to her yet," Rex willingly admits. "Her true lover saved her long after you've already been inside from feeding."
Kai's angel-like appearance turned darkly. His skin burned away, and this gray tint shadowed his complexion. Hot orbs burned into Rex. Just before Kai could use his most powerful gift on him, Rex and his clan faded off like ghosts, and they turned into ectoplasm before they vanished from their sight.
Kai's chest puffed enormously with an inhale of air. His friends knew he met his breaking point. But instead of releasing fire from his lungs, Kai mellowed his anger. Logic came back to his awareness. He turned around with bloodred eyes as he looked at everyone staring at him with uncertainty.
"Did anybody sense Rex and his clan here?" Kai asked in this seethed undertone, but before anyone could answer.
John, Ava, Samantha, John's clan, Mia, Sharlene, and more vampiresses land in the parking lot. "Well, I am waiting?" Kai spoke more sharply this time, which brought everyone's attention on alert to hear that alpha dominance in his pitch.
"No, none of us sensed Rex was around," Ivan was the first to bravely announce.
Kai nodded as he gathered his thoughts for a second. He turned around and saw Victoria's purse on the pavement. Deeply he took a hefty inhale through his nostrils. Like replaying a live image, Kai saw every movement Victoria made. Even when Rex summoned that same monster on her for the second time.
Trying to get away, he saw her fall onto black ice. Which was created by Rex's one advisor that never wears a shirt, has an ice gift, Kai discovered.
Victoria's purse went flying out of her reach, and was still left by this tire belonging to somebody else's parked car. After getting off the ice, he watched the memory of her scent run and the monster chasing her. Up until that monster vanished from having a weakness to light. He watched as Orlando did his job and saved her. Then her scent fades down the street.
Yet throughout the whole event, he followed every step of her scent. Not once did he smell Rex or his clan.
"Where's Jack!" Kai summoned this echolocation in hopes Jack would get there. Without further disappointment, Jack came next to Kai with Ace and Rose after overhearing the call from hanging out elsewhere that was nearby.
Together the three of them were baffled as to what happened. Until they collected it themselves from picking up Victoria's scent.
"Victoria is with Orlando, get as close as you can and make sure she's safe," Kai seethed in a gentle command, then briefly explained. "Rex tried to catch her, but she was saved by Orlando."
Just as Jack, Ace, and a few other vampires went to bolt off, Sharlene said, "I'll go with you."
Jack whipped his neck in her direction and hissed his fangs ghastly at her. "No! You're carrying our offspring, you stay back!"
Sharlene bites the inside of her cheek to have no choice but to follow his authority. Having Jack's sacred mark, Sharlene was now submitted to his will without much of a choice. Still, Jack and most of their friends didn't know about the mark. Rose, Mia, Kai, and a few other vampiresses only knew the truth.
Jack, Ace, and the rest of them disappeared before anyone's sight. Although Kai was surprised, Jack didn't notice that Sharlene gritted her anger and listened to his command.
"Now what?" Ivan asked.
"Either Rex or one of his advisors has the gift that is more powerful than Jack's gift to sense danger quicker than us." Kai finally shared his thoughts as he turned around to face them. "None of us smelled Rex. Which means that vampire can hide their scent from any of us knowing if they were here as a threat."
Kai's friends were shocked, but Samantha hid her expression behind John, her brother's shoulder. Out of anybody, Sharlene took this discovery the hardest. She and everyone else now understood, Rex gave her and Jack the lust spell to bring down Kai's defenses to distract them.
Which worked all too well since Kai put his personal affairs aside and even stayed out late to investigate how this happened. Everyone knew Victoria was getting less time with Kai because he's been busy trying to figure out who committed this crime on Jack and Sharlene.
Before Sharlene would break down in front of anybody, she walked away as Rome tried to stop her. "Just leave me be!" she hissed at Rome and then disappeared into a cloud of black smoke. Rose, Mia, Ava, and other vampiresses took off to follow her, but Samantha and her vampiress friends didn't leave.
Kai eyed her like a lion, cornering a defenseless gazelle. With one finger, Kai signaled for Samantha to come forth. She was hesitant but slowly strode up. Kai's malicious glare made every bone in her body quiver.
"If I find out that you set my mate up to find me feeding outside. You will pay greatly," Kai warned in a gruesome tone.
"I did nothing," Samantha lied.
Kai grimaced at her before snatching her throat. John stepped up to protect his sister, but Kai glared at him and was about to use his most powerful gift. Until his pregnant cousin Ava intervened by standing in front of John.
"Stop, Kai!" Ava begged. "We don't need to do this. Just let Samantha go!"
Kai loosened his grip on Samantha's throat and warned. "I know you spoke to Victoria before Rex almost got her. If I find out you've been working with him, you are going to regret it."
Done with her, Kai shoved her away then he walked off to get Victoria's purse before he vanished. To follow him next was his clan.
Meanwhile, John, his wife Ava, and his clan stayed back. "I hope Kai is wrong." John glared at his sister. "I hope you weren't part of the cause of this because if you are, I can't protect you from Kai. You know he's far too powerful. If it wasn't for Ava stopping him, we both know that could have been worse."
Instead of lying to her older brother, Samantha and her friends disappeared. John sighed when he looked at Ava and hugged her for a second before they left with the remainder of their clan.
