“Pull yourself together, Anu. You can’t show such weakness. It’s pathetic. You almost allowed your friend to die,” Muwang scolded abrasively.

“I-I know,” was all I could muster, partially unable to accept my incompetence to defend someone so precious to me. I fled the kingdom leaving my parents to die years ago, and I nearly left Arisara in a similar predicament, if my Luna hadn’t mustered enough strength to interfere.

“This isn’t about taking the high ground, or acting morally virtuous. This is life and death, and you’re playing with a pack that doesn’t value the former. If you want to weep and waffle around in pity, be my guest, but don’t expect me to help you the next time someone needs saving.” Muwang’s tone had considerably shifted from sarcastic to disparaging. I felt the utter shame in his tone; I didn’t deserve to be a shifter.
