"Miss Lockhart, we have arrived." the driver announces. He then went out of the car to open the car door.
"Thank you," I stated. Fortunately, the rain has stopped. Bringing out my white Jimmi Choo sneakers, the road is still wet from the rain. Pieces of evidence of the pouring rain are visible everywhere, and a few scattered leaves were on the road. Nevertheless, that didn't stop me from running with excitement to the waiting area intended for us, the people waiting. Observing, there are already a lot of people waiting inside. I instantly made myself to the nearest spot where Adler could easily spot me. He's here; he's here! He's finally here!
"Badum, badum." my heart drastically reacted. It is as if it knows that it doesn't belong to me but to the person I have admired for years. "Please stop, heart, he might hear you." my internal dialogue intervenes. Minutes have passed, unfamiliar faces reuniting with their loved ones have already passed through me. Tick stock, tick-tock. Where is he? I rummaged into my bag to find my phone. Perhaps I am mistaken about his arrival time.
"Ruby!" A familiar voice called. Stunned by the sudden back hug, my heart has started racing again. "Badum badum badum." The familiar scent had reached my nostrils, together with his warm, embracing arms. I knew this man was Adler. Rapidly turning around, I hugged him more tightly than ever. My eyes were starting to water. I miss this man, I miss my best friend, and I miss my sweet love. Perhaps minutes had passed before we let go of each other. As we let go, I had the chance to examine closely the face I hadn't seen for years. His piercing dark brown eyes, slightly curled dark brown locks, long lashes, his tall nose, and his manly lips. He can easily compete with all the models out there—my own godlike man. I miss this. My man has finally arrived.
He was slowly caressing my face as he looked into my eyes intimately. "How have you been, my sweet Ruby?" he breathily asked. I stared back at those beautiful eyes. I was getting lost on how deep and transparent it was. Does he have feelings for me? Does he feel the same? Why do his eyes convey something? Those were the words that popped through my mind as I was lost in his eyes. But I know I must be mistaken. Here I go again, thinking way too ahead. I brought myself to reality immediately.
"I am kicking and alive, Addy." I happily responded. "Don't you have anything to say to me?" I cheekily asked while turning my body sideways repeatedly. My eyebrows were wiggling, getting excited to his observation of the new me.
"Hmmm, your new hair?" he said. He was observing me keenly. His pricing eyes were hawk-like, trying to find what's the answer to my question.
"Nope, try again!" I responded. Minutes have passed, and he hasn't still given me another answer. With his eyes still stuck looking at me, I gave up—literal hands in the air.
"Seriously?! It's my weight, you dummy!" I jumped to imitate a headlock, but he was too tall for me to be able to do that. In the alternative, I punched his stomach jokingly, which probably failed because all I could feel was his hard rock abdomen. Unfair; how can he manage to be physically fit while handling a lot of companies at the same time.
Boisterous laughter was all the response I heard from him. "Ruby, even if you are different from the last time we met, I would still recognize you despite any weight changes. That's how I deeply know everything about you." he smirkingly said. Stunned by his sentence, I instantly blush at that. Please, don't be visible; my mind is chanting endlessly. I can feel how the air has stuck through my lungs. The tension in the air is heavy. It is like we were only the people present in the waiting area at the moment.
Clearing my throat has somehow lessened it. "What are you saying? Let's go now. I know you are tired." I purposely changed the subject. I am not ready to be rejected yet. This is still our first reunion, and I am not going to ruin that with a confession. I am afraid I might be imagining things in my delusions.
Walking out together, I spotted many people taking glances at us. I guess this man has never lost his charm. He was getting attention even though he didn't do anything. Perhaps if I were those ladies, I might be doing the same. This man's physical feature is just out of the world. And with ladies in mind, I suddenly urge to ask him about his relationship status. "Addy, did you have a relationship when you were training with your brothers?" I nervously asked. I was unintentionally flashing a fake smile and curious eyes. Maybe because we were walking, that is why he was unable to answer my question. Silence has covered us.
We arrived where my car had been parked outside. The driver flawlessly placed the languages Adler has brought. After settling the luggage, we instantly got inside the vehicle and made ourselves comfortable. We have done all that, but Adler still hasn't answered my question. I was getting impatient. Does he have something to hide with me? " Did you have a relationship when you were training with your brothers? Answer me." I asked him again. His face is not facing me. It feels like I am asking a serious question that will cost his life.
We were silent throughout the journey. I am not sure what was so difficult with my question. It was either a yes or no answer. Maybe he did; he just didn't want to answer me. With that thought, we were not uttering any single word. The happiness I felt when he arrived was instantly replaced by the familiar loneliness. Do I know the girl? Why didn't he introduce me to her? His apparent silence had me overthinking; I've never heard silence this loud.
Silently tapping my fingers on my lap, the road we are taking is slowly getting familiar. We are nearing his house, yet we are still not talking. What should I do? What should I do? These are the words that are continually circulating inside my mind. I had felt the vehicle had to stop a sign of our his house arrival. While deeply sighing, a warm hand stopped the tapping of my fingers, his hands rather. Instantly all the thoughts I had been thinking were interrupted. I looked at him at stared back at our intertwined hands. His dark orbs were directly looking at me as if he was looking through my naked soul. Still staring at each other, he silently broke his long silence. "I've never been connected with any woman other than you, Ruby. I was busy with all of my training and with my alone time with you on our video chats." he sincerely said. I was dumbfounded by the words he just spouted.
How can this man easily take my breath away? All of my negativities have been washed out by his mere touch. The loneliness I had felt was instantly replaced by happiness with just his simple word assurance. I can feel my heart may burst any minute from the heavy emotions he can let me feel. Throughout my life, no other man can do this. It was always him and him alone.
Frozen, I was stuck starting in the air. Processing the words he just told me. Does that mean that I was the only one he was close with? No other woman has touched his heart the way I do? I woke up from my reverie when Adler was all ready to get inside the house and was just waiting for me outside the care. The mischief in his eyes was visible, conveying that he knows how much he can affect me. He must see me being dumbfounded. How embarrassing!
To counter his mischievousness, I intentionally rolled my eyes while he looked at me. I slowly drop my feet, touching the familiar road. And his hands were patiently waiting for me to hold, waiting for me to walk together inside. As we walked hand by hand, we were about to open their main door when we were surprised by the popping sounding confetti and loud greetings. "Welcome Home!" his friends and family happily shouted. I have seen my mother in the crowd, too. With me staring at her, she immediately flashed a smile. It seems that this family has no prior schedules to attend to. Indeed, we are family-oriented.
We entered the house together. Letting go of his hand, I gave his parents the time they needed. Standing at his back and as we were covered with the confetti mess, I never failed to see the handmade poster the housemaids held. "Welcome Home, Baby Addy," I chuckled with the cute nickname. It even had his picture when he was young in a girl's dress. It has been a while since I heard someone calling him that. I was scraping the unshed tears from my eyes out of silent laughing. Indeed he will be offended with the cute handmade tarp.
