Mara only took a few steps before the woods changed shape.
She felt it as a ripple of energy against her skin and a slight dizziness that made the ground wobble under her feet. The trees curved in the corners of her eyes as they adjusted with the new reality, but when she tried to look right at them, they were straight and steady as ever.
Once she was sure the woods were bringing everyone with her, she focused on the dagger in her hand instead, and her head stopped spinning.
As she relaxed into the magic weaving itself around her, the point of the dagger began to glow red, just like Wren's eyes.
The path spilled around the trunk of a huge tree as it abruptly turned in a different direction. A root sprawled across the trail, appearing fully formed in the time it took Mara to blink.
She hopped over it, but Clio made a startled noise and tripped, catching herself heavily against Aiden's arm so she wouldn't fall.
I had Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries playing in my head when I wrote the end of this chapter. Mara and Clio are hell on wheels. Just one more part to this chapter then back to Rowan/Wren.
