Capítulo 39: What was left behind 2/2

[ Annabeth pov ]

Annabeth was sitting outside the infirmary as she had been doing every day for the past week while holding tightly the bracelet Thalia gave her. Inside, the screams of Christina could be heard once again before they suddenly stopped, Luke had left a while ago.

Annabeth knew what happened, they must have knocked her out again while moving on with the procedure, apparently they were getting some shards of glass out of her body, shards of glass which had melted and attached themselves to her arms... or what remained of them. Giving her ambrosia when they did didn't help this at all, making the tissue that regenerated cover the pieces of glass as well. She didn't regret giving her the ambrosia though, otherwise she would have died, however it was painful hearing her screams of agony as the procedure went on.

"You do know there is no need to remain here, don't you child?" asked a centaur that just arrived. Annabeth recognised the 'man', he had introduced himself as Chiron when they arrived, promptly guiding the children to the infirmary so that their wounds could be tended properly.

"I know..." replied Annabeth while looking down, tightening the hug on her knees. "But I wanted to be there, and they said I couldn't be inside while the operation was going on so I am staying here instead."

"I see, well they do have a point, they can't properly focus on performing their surgery with others around." explained Chiron with a kind voice. "Today they will finish her surgeries and she will be free to go to cabin 9 so that she can get some new hands, they won't be just like her actual hands and it might take a while for her to get used to them, but I am sure that with your help she will be just fine."

Annabeth let out a small smile hearing this for the first time since they arrived. "Yes... I will help her."

"That's good." said Chiron. "Now how about you come eat, you can't help her if you don't have energy right?"

Annabeth slowly nodded at this while standing up and following him to the dinning pavilion. This past week had been... hectic, to say the least. Luke had been moving around constantly, checking the place out while meeting new people. Annabeth on the other hand remained next to Christina at all times.

She didn't blame Luke at all, after all he would always return with food for her and tell her stories about what he had managed to learn so far. He said it was his job to make sure this place was good for them and it was her job to protect Christina, just as Thalia told her.

Thalia... Annabeth could still hear the sounds of her flesh being ripped apart by the monsters, she didn't memorise the sight since at the time the tears on her eyes blurred her vision to the point everything was a foggy memory, however the sounds of the breaking boned still haunted her.

Shaking her head to get rid of those thoughts, she focused on what she had to do, that's right, Thalia left her with a mission, to protect Christina, and she would make sure not to fail, at least not again.

Eventually they arrived at the dinning pavilion and were met by the sight of many different demigods sitting on several tables. Annabeth went in Luke's direction, who was sitting in the table reserved for the children of Hermes as well as the unclaimed and those children from minor gods.

Annabeth heard Luke describe the pavilion before and all she could think about was that it was a mess, the same thing went for the distribution of children. There were only twelve cabins in total for each of the twelve gods that held a seat in Olympus. Among this twelve cabins, Hera's and Artemis' cabins were to always remain empty, since neither of the two goddesses had any children. All the demigods born to any minor god who held no throne in Olympus were sent to the Hermes cabin, along with those who had yet to be claimed by their godly parent as their own. Annabeth had been unsure at first about what the 'claiming' thing was, but Luke had explained it was simply the moment when your godly parent acknowledged you as their own. Unfortunately there were many who were not recognised yet, which resulted in Hermes' cabin being extremely overcrowded.

As Annabeth took a seat next to Luke, the blonde boy turned to face her and smiled while ruffling her hair. "You hungry?" he asked while pushing his plate closer to her so that she could grab some.

Annabeth nodded while a sad smile formed on her face. They finally had enough food to fill their stomachs, they had a place were they could sleep without worrying about monster attacks, they had many people who were like them... so why? Why was it that it hurt so much thinking that they couldn't enjoy it? Thalia was a corpse now, turned into a tree by her father to safeguard this camp through a protective barrier, Christina was still alive, yet in constant pain, calling out Thalia's name while screaming whenever she wasn't cursing due to the agony of the surgeries she had to go through. Her forearms were gone and burning scars were left on her legs were the wooden piece that held her down during the fire had touched her. Luke himself didn't come out unscathed either, he now had the soles of his feet with terrible scars and the tips of his fingers were burnt as well. In a way, Annabeth was the one who was doing best, though it was slowly consuming her mind knowing that she came out fine while her family suffered. Clenching the bracelet Thalia gave her tightly, she began to eat a bit of the food on Luke's plate. Her expression slowly growing more determined while stuffing food in her mouth. She remembered what Thalia used to tell her, it is fine to be scared, to be in pain or to be alone, but if you want to protect what is precious to you, you need to learn to move through all of that.

Luke simply stared in Annabeth direction, his eyes following every feature of her face and every change in her expression. Focusing his eyes on Annabeth small scar on her cheek, which she had gotten while being alone with Christina before they had met, he pulled her cheek and smile kindly at her.

[ Chiron pov ]

"So? Is what I am thinking correct?" asked the centaur to the director of the camp, the god Dionysus.

"Yes, she was cursed." replied the god in a bored tone. "Though the curse is already over, basically it just destroyed her hands and a piece of her mind."

"Sigh... she is too young for something like this." said Chiron while shaking his head.

"Who knows." said Dionysus while shrugging his shoulders. "No one is too young too insult the gods so no one is too young to be punished by the gods." continued the god while sipping some Diet Coke. "If she indeed offended a god then she got out lucky, not everyone would forget an insult after simply taking her hands and a bit of her sanity."
