[ Officer Johnson pov ]
"Get over here!" said loudly the chief of police, calling the attention of the officers nearby to him. "We have a new lead."
"A new lead?" asked one of the officers with slight relief on his face.
"Indeed. We just got a call from the Pennsylvania police department, there appears to be a girl that fits the description moving around their cities. The lates report said that she entered a hospital and threatened a doctor to check her wounds along with another girl. I will be honest here... none of this makes much sense. The two girls apparently held the doctor at knife-point, the worse part however is the wounds the doctor described. The two girls appear to be involved in some form of gang activity based on the conclusions the police department of Pennsylvania arrived to, but there is much left to investigate." explained the chief, a serious expression on his face while bringing out a binder that contained the information on the case.
"Officers Johnson, Kristart, Parker and Gallagher, you four are coming with me." said the chief while indicating the four officers too get ready. "We will be out of town for a while so pack up. We leave first thing tomorrow."
Arriving at his apartment, Robert Johnson couldn't help but let a tired sigh leave his mouth while taking his uniform off. They had been working on this case for so long now that it felt impossible to actually find the girl, especially because of how many different possibilities. At first the police assumed she had ran away from her mother, which based on the not so well hidden rumours didn't seem completely strange, however as time went by, the girl didn't return and instead kept going further away north, forcing the police to search upstate.
One day reports started coming in that a girl matching her description was spotted heading south, which completely threw the investigation they had been building so far off. Apparently the girl was now with another small girl and they were heading south for some reason.
Months had gone by since the girl first left her home and based on the new theories going around she had been kidnapped by a gang or a child-trafficking group and managed to escape. This story has it's problems however, especially since apparently she asked the doctor that attended her at the hospital not to contact the police, nor did she try to get help.
"Where are you headed to?" asked Robert to no one in particular while following the map with all of the girl's sightings with his fingers. "Who are you running from?"
Robert spent the rest of the night wondering what was going on through the girl's mind, yet no answer came to him. "Sigh, I suppose tomorrow we will be one step closer to finding her..." said Robert, still talking to himself, as the fatigue took over him and he slowly fell asleep.
After what felt like the blink of an eye, Robert woke up to the sound of his phone ringing. Begrudgingly, he moved out of bed while reaching to answer the call.
"Hello?" said Robert while answering the phone call.
"Officer Johnson, I will pick you up in thirty minutes exactly, we are leaving earlier than planned." said the voice on the other end, who Robert recognised as the chief of police.
"Understood." replied Robert, the tiredness leaving his body as he made his way to the bathroom, the phone still on his hand. "Any new developments that made you change your mind?" he asked.
"Yes, we have finally received the full report of the doctor's testimony and I believe we need to hurry up. We have to find the two girls before they get far away..." said the chief of police, his tone slowly getting softer while his phrase ended. "I think they really need help." finalised the chief, his tone coming out as nothing more than a whisper at the end, an audible one that was also filled with sadness.
"Understood, I will get ready immediately." said Robert.
"Good." replied the chief before ending the call.
Robert was left alone in the bathroom, his phone next to the sink while he began to wash his face.
"Hmmm, the doctor's report must be pretty serious for the chief to sound so sad." said Robert aloud.
Robert dressed in his uniform and got ready to leave, before that however he took one last glance at the picture on his nightstand next to his bed while a small smile formed on his face.
"I wonder if she's going through what you went, sis." he said, his words getting lost in the emptiness of the apartment.
