Unable to bear Henry Russell's suspicion any longer, Charlotte Cooper hung up the phone. She knew her words wouldn't get through to him.
Charlotte thought: Do you really not trust me at all? Instead of listening to the rest of what I have to say, you'd rather argue with me. It seems in your eyes, I'm that kind of person.
All the grievances could only be held back in Charlotte's heart as tears welled up in her eyes and fell drop by drop, landing on her hands.
Coming back to her senses, Charlotte hastily wiped away her tears. She didn't want to cry, because what happened wasn't what Henry had described – he was the only person she loved.
Charlotte thought: In that case, when I return home tomorrow, I'll explain it to you, and then you'll believe me.
Charlotte felt that Henry would hear her explanation in person, even if not over the phone. She eagerly went to bed, waiting for tomorrow to come.
Charlotte went to bed and laid down, feeling exhausted. Soon, she fell asleep.
