Capítulo 13: Fur and Jerky

The wooden squares turned out to be for animal hides. A frame to stretch and dry them in the sun.

They had me choose my favorites, so far my favorite furs are the rabbit furs least favorite is the boar fur. The boar fur is coarse while the rabbit's was soft. While I didn't like the fur of the boar it did have a large pair of tusks that it would be really cool if the could do something with.

Once I shared my opinion, they went about butchering the animals. I watch in odd fascination and they placed the game under the fruit trees hung them and slit all their throats to drain them of the blood. Some I had not seen prior but assume have been there, they cut the fur off as it was hanging there. The skinned animal looked strange and alien.

The boar pelt was soaked in a tub of ashes and water they had mixed prior and the rabbit pelts were scraped by Tony. He took the brains of the animals he collected when he skinned them and cooked it with water. He then went back to scraping more like he was double checking to see if he got everything. If he felt sure he did he just smeared it with brain paste and rolled it up putting it to the side.

He left the animal skins for the day and went about Butchering the animals. The bones were set to the side in a pot, while the meat was cut into many sections. The rabbits were cut into strips and strung. The boar had several cut portions some seemed vaguely similar to ones I'd seen in stores. They might be exactly the same but I never bothered to pay attention. Once the meat was cut up it was put in the cold room that was at the bottom of the stairs. I have no idea how much that would help but I guess I'll find out.

The rabbit meat that had been strung was still sitting out in the sun. It all seem so wrong to me, but when I think about how I usually get and handle food I have nothing to say. Especially considering the number of times I had meat go bad despite the modern convenience of a fridge.

The pot with bones was filled with water and hung above the fire. I noticed it was hung higher than before. The hook that hooked onto the pot was on the looped handle of the pot but the hook itself had another section that hooked onto the metal cooking frame. It looked fancy an swirly but it seems it had several sections to adjust the length of the hook so the pot could be a good distance from the fire. Such smart designs gave me a nostalgic appreciation for the ranges and stoves of my youth. If this is all a dream I think I'd marvel at the simplicity of a knob that adjusts the level of heat on my range and stove, for now I'm ever grateful to Tony. The more I pay attention to all that he does the more I realize how complex it is to make the most simple things happen.

Tony rinsed the boar pelt and then scrapped it taking the fur off as he did so. Then it was treated with some brain mush as well. It was set aside and he pulled out the Rabbit pelts he set aside before and after rinsing one he began to rub it with his fingers as he worked I could see it look white where he had done it.

It took a long time to do and in the meantime I found that Logan was bringing some more rabbits. So I went ahead and hung those upside-down like I had seen Tony do with the rest. Once I did Logan would slit open their throats; for dead animals the sure did bleed.

When I went back to see what Tony was up to he had started rubbing the animal skins in more creative but apparently not effective ways since he would look at them and change the way he did it. He sure looked tired. I don't think I wanna help with that if it's that exhausting. Since tony does so much I decided to cook for the next few days. It won't be as good but Tony is busy and I can get used to the way it works better.

He managed to finish the rabbit furs and I helped make the next batch of brain mush for the next batch of pelts. Since I was willing to help with easy things he had me set up a fire with some sticks in a cone shape around it to put the rabbit pelts I thought were done on once the fire was really smoking. He would check and told me to take them off once they reached a certain color. I also smoked the rabbit meat that was drying in the sun. The last thing we did was to oil the furs and then they were done.

This took days and went on for days I never bothered to count how many Furs we went through or how much rabbit jerky we made. At a certain point I began to question why we needed so much, and it occurred to me that I had never asked.

At dinner one night I looked over at Tony and asked "Why are we making so much jerky and furs anyway?"

Tony looks up at me still massaging his hands " We need somethin' to trade for other supplies we need. There is plenty I can't be make myself"

"Oh. . . So your going to town at some point? When do you think you will go?"

"Next day or so"

"I wanna come with you"

Tony looks at me "Of course. Any reasons makin' ya interested?" I think his accent got thicker.

"Just curious" I'm starting to get excited

"Before we go make sure to pick anythin' you want to keep"
