Capítulo 10: Cultural Differences

"What's so funny Aila?" Tony asks. Logan still seems to be sleeping

"It's how well that fits in with stories from where I'm from. Or how it could go wrong" Greek myths of satyrs? And the idea of them summoning one of those religious people who think the eyes of a goat or horns is a sign of a demon. A cult worshiping a guy who was trying to summon someone.

Tony gives me a lift of his brow.

"It would be really hard to explain." He doesn't seem to be taking that for an answer

"It involves different cultures like ones that aren't there anymore. It was mostly my imagination of peoples reaction to seeing that." Before he has time to press me for more details I add "Do they happen to have any habits of playin pan flutes or being good with plants?"

"I'll tell you, but only if you give me one example of those different cultures." I nod at Tony's request "You first so you don't worm your way out of it" Tony insists

"Okay fine." I sigh. I wasn't planning to worm my way out but whatever. " So we have stories about a group of people, the Greek. So they believed their was a group of gods that ruled over different aspects of the world. One of them was called Pan. Pan was the god of nature and one of his biggest followers were said to be Satyrs. A being who had the upper body of a human and the lower body of a goat." I hope I made sense.

"Well they do play an instrument they call a pan flute. It's this thing thing that has reeds of different lengths with a hole in the center. though why did you want to know about being good with plants?" Of course Tony had to ask more.

"It was said due to their belief in the god Pan they were close to nature and could play the pan flute to cast spells often to make plants grow" It's what I remember from a fictional book based on Greek mythology anyway.

"Well I've never heard of anything like that. All herbivore clans tend to be more prone to being good with plants. It's more common for us to be farmers as we don't have to eat meat and thus we get that stigma. Though it's really the other way 'round. Carnivorous clans just rely on hunting more than farming, it's rare for them to be farmers." So no magic then.

" Logan said something about a population issue?" No more explaining myths for me please

" Ah we have less people every generation." He looks so calm when it seems like a world ending issue.

" Why?"

"It's very rare to have females. There can be 10 kids and if you had 1 baby that was a girl you would be lucky. It just keeps getting worse." That's a big deal

"Well not exactly" Logan says from my lap. So glad he's awake I need to move my legs around. "It was that way for so long that that's still how people see it, however there's been advancements to medicine so now we don't lose females to childbirth."

Logan buts in, "Then why do we not have many people?"

"It's not that simple." He sighs and sits up "While we have plenty of females that can live long fulfilling lives it was discovered that females only have a given period for giving birth. Despite common ideas we do have more people than we used to. The ratio of men to women did not improve with this. One in a Three hundred. That's the ratio in giving birth. The longer living females can have longer gestatio- " he pauses and I look over to see that Tony doesn't seem to know that word " Carry children in pregnancy for longer. So though they live longer they don't have as many children and it's rarer to have females in those clans. This all happened before we starting making females Matriarchs."

" Wait really?" " What do you mean matriarchs?" Tony says a step before me. Logan looks at tony and nods.

" Due to there being so few females it was obvious that they would get better treatment. Once one female took over adjusting the official village positions females would take their admirers and from their own villages and towns. It became customary to make females Matriarchs once they came of age." I point at myself. "That does include you. You are already considered a matriarch and we are your followers."

" Am I supposed to do anything important? Am I required to give birth?" I feel strangely calm about this.

" Required no better respected by your peers if you do. Our population is low but it has stabilized. All your required to do is recruit people to govern your area." He must have been able to read the 'my area' question on my face. " This would now be considered your area. One usually claims an area near their mothers or doesn't leave to till they have had their following construct an area for them. Occasionally there is a village with no Matriarch and a female will go claim that area."

"This is all so unreal to me. Where I'm from females and males have equal population. It took a long time for women to receive anything close to equal treatment and they still don't exactly. We actually have an over population issue. Men can earn more doing the same job and the idea of a female in power is often strongly rejected." I see the shock in their eyes. " Not all the men are that way. I have a brother and a father and cousins their all good to me and school friends too"

Logan and Tony look at each other "No matter what you came from we will take good care of you as our matriarch now." Tony says as Logan nods
