Capítulo 20: A Complicated onversation

There was silence for a moment.

[I am 143, host.]

'143? Don't you have a name?'

[No.]

'Why not?'

[…]

What was it supposed to say? [Because it is my name? And all my other Hosts have called me 143.]

'Oh.'

She sighed and looked over at the officials. They were still talking. And Titus was still engrossed in his book.

'Have you had many hosts before me then?'

[Yes.]

'Were they nice people too?'

[Some of them were. Others were just crazy.]

Freya thought for a moment. 'Were all of them like me? Someone who had nothing to go on in life?'

[No. Most of them were people who died or were dead people. It is my first time meeting a healthy living host actually.]

Freya sweatdropped. She had the same system as dead or dying people? That did not seem like an auspicious sign.

As Freya continued to have minor chitchats with the system in her head, inside the Voice Barrier at the Principal table the three were still in a high-intensity argument.

"Would you stop with your prejudice," William scolded Tressa in exasperation.

Tressa bared her fangs at him. "Do you think I don't see what you are doing, William? That human might be the Representative of Andrew but that does not mean that you are going to somehow become her best friend. She is not May!"

William looked at the younger Vampire with cold eyes. "I know what I am doing."

"Do you?" Tressa hissed. "Because all I see is a Vampire Lord who can not get over his little human crush. And why is it that Andrew's representatives are always women? Does that man have to always be so…so sexist?"

The Principal let out a sigh.

The two looked at the man.

"Are you finally going to say something valuable?" the woman asked with a scornful voice.

The principal looked at the woman with a deep gaze. "Don't think that just because of your Sire, you can be disrespectful, Tressa."

The woman froze. She realised how she was reacting was not normal.

"And may I ask why you are so against Ms Wang?" the Principal asked her. "You were fine with her presence until you heard she was a representative of Andrew. Mind telling me what kind of a prejudice you have against her?"

Tressa scowled as she stared at her feet but did not answer.

"Or could it be that you think she is replacing your family member so you have to be hostile to her?"

Tressa's pupils shook. "Yanli was just scared of the consequences. I was going to talk to her about considering the offer again."

The Principal laughed. "Consider the offer…has our academy reached such a state that Ms Grover has to consider the offer?"

Tressa froze. "That…"

"You are no longer a witch," the Principal said cruelly. Tressa gasped and looked at him with eyes full of hurt. "Don't give me that look. It is better for you to acknowledge the truth. And since you are not a witch, you are not someone that the Grover Family or its members want to interact with. You can even say, they don't want you in their lives."

"Don't you think you are being a bit too cruel?" William asked him.

The Principal froze. He stared at the crying face of Tressa and then massaged his forehead with a sigh. "Right. Anyway, all this is moot if she does not have a Mana Manifestation."

Mana Manifestation was the proper name of Actualized Magic. A few decades back, one of the Professors of a High Academy ruled that 'Actualized Magic' could be further developed and that as people grew, their Magic evolved.

That conversation was heard by multiple people in many parts of the world and the term Actualized Magic became popular. But the officials and those who were of the older generation still used the term Mana Manifestation.

Tressa frowned on hearing that the Actualized Magic would determine the girl's fate. She did not hate Ms Wang but she could not let the girl have this job. It was one that niece rejected because she was coerced to do so. It was a job that her sister and her family had coveted not too long ago.

She had to protest.

"But-"

"I am the Principal."

Tressa quieted down. She knew that if she pushed more, she would lose her standing in the Principal's eyes.

The man removed the barrier around them.

"If you were going to make that kind of a comment then why did we waste our time?" William asked in annoyance.

The Principal smiled. "Because it is really rare for me to meet you, Little Billy."

The Vampire glared at the man.

[Host! The three are back!]

Hearing the system's words, the girl looked up. Seeing the three really coming their way she looked at Titus. The man was too concentrated in reading his book and did not notice it.

Freya nudged his side.

Titus blinked and then looked at her with a questioning expression.

She pointed to the three teachers.

Titus looked at them and put his book back into the storage ring.

"Well, Ms Cheng," the Principal said in a low voice, "We have reached a concession in your situation."

Freya looked up at him hopefully.

The principal hesitated for a few moments and then let out a sigh. "While it is true that Andrew's recommendation was for the more advanced classes, it is more important to give the right teachers to the right classrooms."

Freya nodded. That made sense. She felt her heart stutter as she realised that she might not be getting the work here. She had to think of a way to make money then. She had her sick mother and her little brother to take care of and she needed to find a job for that.

"So we will give you a test," the Principal said.

That surprised her.

Not just her, it surprised the two vampires flanking the principal's sides as well.

"We will conduct a Magical test," the man said to her, "We will use the Lotus Test that I am sure you have seen before again. Whatever the result of the test, you will not leave too disappointed. This I promise you."

"Whatever the result?" she asked him.

"Yes. Whatever."

What about the teacher not having any magic at all?

She did not ask that of-course. What if that made them not even give her a chance. Then again, could this even be called a chance? She did not suddenly gain magic by getting a System so the chances of her getting this job was nil.

She wondered if the old Paper factory still hired a tester for their 7 day project. Though the pay would not be great, it should help her coast along for a few more days until she could think of a more stable solution.

"Then shall we leave?" the principal asked.

Freya nodded.

"Bring Old Vlad along, Little Tressa," the Principal said to the woman. "We don't want the staff in the tower to be too bothered, correct?"

Tressa closed her eyes and muttered a spell. A Geometric yellow pattern appeared under her feet and in front of the corpse. There was a flash and then there were no apparitions around then.

The principal led the group out.

Titus looked on, unsure of what to do.

"Come with us, lad," the principal said, "We will check out your power as well while we are at it."

Titus hurriedly followed after, falling in step with Freya.
