Capítulo 96: Cringy battle

Rex woke up from his relaxing sleep full of energy and vigour. He got dressed and walked out the door and headed to the Pokémon gym where he would be battling for his 6th badge. It didn't take long to get there. Upon walking through the sliding doors, he was greeted by the sound of explosions. It seemed that someone was battling. He didn't really care and headed to the reception where he would need to sign in.

"Welcome to the Celadon City gym. Are you here to spectate of battle?" asked the woman in a green dress with a flower pattern stitched on it. the smell of flowers was very intense here since it was a grass type gym.

"Battle." He responded succinctly.

"Very well, the gym leader is currently busy. There will be an hour between battles so that her Pokémon can be healed. You can go up to the spectating area if you like or you can come back in an hour." She said with a smile.

"I'll stay, thank you." He said before ascending the flight of stairs. But a twisted frown surfaced on his face immediately and black lines formed on his forehead when he heard a voice coming from the battlefield. How bad was his luck to run into them twice in the span of two days? Naturally, it was Ash who was currently battling.

When he took the final step a grass field took up most of his vision. To his surprise, there was a lot of people spectating the battles today. He wondered why. As he took a random seat, he saw that Misty and Brock had taken notice of him. But he simply ignored it and focused on the battle.

"Hey Brock, look, it's Rex. It seems Ash is lucky; It seems he'll get a chance to see how he battles." Said Misty while nodding in Rex's direction. Brock looked in the direction Misty nodded in and saw Rex with his shades, messy hair and a simple white dress shirt and black dress pants.

"It seems you're right. It will be a good chance for Ash to see how his opponent battles before meeting in the league." Said Brock with a nod.

"I really don't have anything against Ash, but what Rex said back then was right. Plus, I know for a fact he's hiding a Gyarados and a Machop in his pocket. They swept through all three of my sisters Pokémon." She said with a slight tremble. She couldn't help it when she recalled the monstrosity that was Gyarados.

"I see, he used Bellsprout and Scyther against me. So, we now know four of his Pokémon. I wonder which one he will use in this battle." Brock said while holding his chin. but they soon directed their attention towards the ongoing battle.

"Charmander use Flamethrower!" yelled Ash. Charmander ran forward and sent a massive jet of flame to stop the Razorleaf Weepinbell had sent out.

"Good, now use Skull bash!" he shouted. Charmander burst forward and smashed its head into Weepinbell sending it crashing into the floor.

"Weepinbell return." Said Erika.

"Wow, Ash might actually win." Said a girl with ponytails.

"Yeah, he's a lot more impressive than he looks." Said another. Rex cringed at her words. How was that impressive?

"Your battle skills are impressive Ash, but there's one thing you don't have, empathy with your Pokémon. Without it, you'll never become a great trainer like me. Now I'm going to give you a lesson on empathy. Gloom go!" she yelled as she threw her Pokeball out.

Rex hid his face in his hands. This was too cringy. Why can't she act normal? But then he noticed a certain trio hiding in the background about to make their entrance. Rex clicked his tongue in annoyance. He was already fed up with team rocket and these dumbasses made it worse. If he wasn't wrong, their little stunt burnt down the entire gym. That would stop him from having his battle. He couldn't have that.

"Marshadow, I think they need a good rest," he whispered. Two red flames appeared in his shadow which quickly disappeared.

Jessie, James and Meowth who were about to reveal themselves were knocked out cold by something.

When they woke up, they found themselves in an alleyway. A man was standing in front of them with a grin on his face.

"W-Who are you?" asked Jessie as she looked up.

"I'm an old acquaintance of your boss. Now, there are two ways this will go. Either you walk away after handing me the glass bottle. Or I break your legs and make you give it to me. The choice is up to you." he said, his grin widening to show his pearly whites.

"If you know who our boss is then-" Jessie couldn't finish when James cut in quickly.

"She's talking rubbish, sorry, the first option sounds fine. Here take it," he said throwing the bottle to Rex

"You should learn from him," Rex said to Jessie while pointing at James. Then he turned to Meowth. "Little cat who can talk. It's marvellous. I haven't heard anything like that before. Anyway, keep up the good work you three. I wouldn't have stepped in if it didn't impact me." He said before disappearing around a corner. Marshadow stood there for a moment, said something to meowth and sank into the floor.

Jessie and James looked at Meowth. "What did it say?" they both said at the same time.

"He-he said that we are lucky he spared us. We should be grateful we chose to comply, or it could have been a very expensive hospital fee." He said. Sweat dripping off of his forehead.

"Hmm, that Pokémon looks rare and powerful, maybe we should stea-"

BAM!

"Were you dropped on the head as a child? We could have died, and you still want to mess with him?" Meowth yelled after hitting Jessie over the head.

"Jeez, I get it ok. But you don't have to hit me for it though. Whatever. Let's get out of here before he changes his mind." She said before getting to her feet.

Rex chuckled at their antics as he leaned against the wall around the corner. Marshadow popped out of the floor and fist-bumped him. They both chuckled and headed back to the gym. The battle should have ended by now.
