Capítulo 51: Chapter 51

“Yes. Gene told me not to take sides and I didn’t. We dropped you both, but that wasn’t the only reason we dropped you.”

“Well, what other reason was there?”

“I was angry at you both,” Marjorie said.

“Angry at us? Why?” Jason asked.

“Because I did feel like a mother to you both. Our kids live far away. Some of my sons are on different continents, for God’s sake. Gene and I did feel like parents to you and Howard. When you two separated, we were totally surprised. Neither of you had said a thing. We were hurt, Jason. We thought the least you could have done was confide in us. Gene and I have been married a long time. Maybe we could have helped.”

Tears were beginning to form in Marjorie’s eyes, and Jason could feel them begin to well up in his own. He knew part of it probably had to do with the two glasses of wine they each had drunk, but he also knew that most of it had to do with the truth coming out.

“I’m sorry, Marjorie,” he said. “We didn’t mean to hurt you, or Gene.”
