Capítulo 23: Chapter 23

“Hmm.” The man nodded. He wore jeans and a black hoodie with the hood on. Not enough clothes for an October night. The twinge of unease was back. What was a man doing in the middle of nowhere without proper clothing?

“Come on.”

“What?”

“You can’t stay here. I have some gas at my place.” The man opened the door, and Arlo cursed himself for not having locked it. Judging by the mistakes he’d made today, no one would believe he’d been on the run, sort of, for seven years. Cold air swept over him, and he reached for the phone and put it in his pocket.

“Thank you, I appreciate it.” He didn’t. He wanted the man to leave him alone.

“No problem. Come on, this way.” The man motioned toward a trail snaking its way between the trees. Arlo rolled his shoulders and glanced at the man, he still couldn’t see his features properly. Swallowing hard, he took a step forward.

“So…where are you heading?”

Arlo bit his lip. “Nowhere. I needed to clear my mind and didn’t keep track of the roads.”
