The house Ransom wanted him to see in Huntersville was a brand new ranch, and the agent was waiting for them at the curb, smiling broadly.

“Mr. Burke, how do you do? I’m Alice Sayles. I’ve heard of you, and I’m quite excited to do business with you.” She peered curiously at Parrish.

“Ms. Sayles. This is my friend, Parrish Rutledge. The home will be his—I’m simply helping him look for it.”

“Hello.” She gave him a cheery smile, and Parrish returned it. Since technically he still worked for Ransom, he knew they couldn’t admit to their actual relationship. “I think you’ll be impressed by this house. It’s new construction.”

“Hmm. I hadn’t thought of that,” Ransom said. Well, if it came to that, neither had Parrish. Did it matter? “How much longer will the construction be going on in this community?”

“At least another year, but this section is complete.”

“That’s good, isn’t it, Ransom?”

“Yes.”
