I read for ten minutes and put the book down. “Fay? How long are you going to be on there?”

“I don’t know, why?” She clicked and typed. “A few more minutes.”

I stared at her for a long time, but she didn’t turn around. “Well, I’m going to get cleaned up and—”

“Yeah, okay.”

“Today’s my birthday,” I said, walking to my bedroom. I grabbed some clean clothes and a towel and started for the bathroom.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” She stood in the living room, looking at me. “I didn’t know.”

“It’s no big deal.”

She hesitated and gave me a quick hug. “Happy birthday, Uncle Allan.” She leaned back and looked around, blushing a little. “What are we doing, then?”

“It’s up to you.”

“Aren’t you gonna have a party or something?”

I was—but she’d be gone by then. On Saturday, Cameron was organizing a small get-together at his place. “This weekend. So, let’s see, do you want to—”
