We found Eileen and Jude by the fountain.
“Where were you?” Eileen frowned at Noah. “Your father’s looking for you out in the back. He caught a firefly.”
“Want to go check it out, Noah?”
Noah ran ahead of me the whole way. We passed Dayton and Elsie, and grabbed Fay on the run. “Dad caught a bug and her butt’s on fire!” Noah said to her.
Outside, Davinder was having a conversation with Dali and his latest boyfriend. When Noah and Fay rushed up demanding to see the bug, Davinder produced it from inside his pocket. It was actually still alive and glowing in his hand. “I have to let it go now,” he said to the kids, holding his hand open. But the firefly lingered on his palm.
“It wants to stay with you,” Fay said. She looked up at me. “See, it’s not moving from his hand.”
“Yeah well, it’s probably a little woozy, that’s all. God knows what’s in your dad’s pockets.”
